06 Mar 1-3 Activity: Creating a Grid
12607Overview
Using grids is an effective way to organize the various types and pieces of content a publication may need. Different grid types are used for different purposes and choosing the correct one is essential to ensuring your page layout is clear and easy to read. For example, some publications like books and newsletters are usually focused on the use of text, while others like magazines may focus on photos and images. The page layout and grid structures used for print and digital publications are also often different. This activity will help you become familiar with how a page is laid out and how to create the components of a grid for a digital publication.
Scenario
You are a freelance graphic designer. A local museum is curating collections from various artists for their upcoming seasonal exhibits. You are working with the museum’s marketing team to create various promotional materials for these exhibits. The marketing team has provided you with the images and the copy to include in an article for their digital magazine. You need to create a two-page layout for this article.
In this activity, you need to create grids and organize the content to create an appropriate page layout for the article. You are not required to modify or edit the given content.
Directions
Use Adobe InDesign to create grid layouts to accommodate a two-page magazine article. Then, import and organize the content provided in the Museum Collection Design Brief from the Supporting Materials section over your grid layouts.
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
Create grid structures for a digital magazine article based on the specifications provided in the design brief.
Open a new InDesign document.
Use a separate layer to create the grids.
Choose one or more of the following grid types:
Manuscript

Name of Exhibition
Sub-Headline Information
Date of Exhibition
Location of Exhibition
Guest Artists and their Collection
Body Copy
Organize the images provided in the design brief using guidelines that are appropriate for the selected grid layout.
Use a separate layer to complete this step.
Resize images if necessary and include appropriate citations.
Label the grid layout components for both pages of the article.
Use text boxes on a separate layer to complete this step.
Include the following, as applicable:
Margins
Modules
Gutters and alleys
Columns
Spatial zones
Flowlines
Markers
Explain why the grid types and layouts you chose are appropriate for the given purpose.
Include your response in a separate text box on a new page of the InDesign document.
Explain how following the guidelines for using grid systems helped increase the efficiency of your design.
Include your response in a separate text box in the InDesign document.
Package the magazine layout for submission.
Use the default settings to create the package.
Compress the package folder into a ZIP file.
Note: You will need to provide attribution for images in this assignment. The museum, the artists, and their collections are fictitious. You should use the original image source for the correct attributions, not the fictitious names and titles provided in the museum collection design brief. Proper attribution has been provided within the Museum Collection Images ZIP file. Refer to the Openly Licensed Images section of this course for more information on how to provide attribution.
What to Submit
Submit your InDesign package as a ZIP file. Sources should be cited according to MLA style.
