Good Afternoon Esteemed Colleagues and Dr. Crawford,
Someone has got to go first – and I figure I will jump in and get us launched. This morning I will be sharing some insights as to my investigation into the National Career Development Association (NCDA) Website (https://associationdatabase.com/aws/NCDA/pt/sp/Home_Page (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.). After I thoroughly review the resources available on this website, I will discuss a component that I found particularly useful. I will also provide an analysis as to how the component relates to the work of a Career Counselor.
To start this post, I accessed the NCDA website and was immediately overwhelmed by the amount of material available. There are many resources available, and it was difficult to narrow down to a single topic. The areas I would like to focus on was fond under the Resources – Occupational Trends section. In essence, this page contained articles on some occupational trends that are current. I am interested in occupational trends for two reasons. First, I am a Program Chair at Ashford University, and as such, my role is to develop curriculum that supports occupational goals of my students. The second reason is that I myself need to keep my skills relevant to the ever changing work environment, and would like to assess myself against what is current trending in careers. I will now dive deeper into why the occupational trends are so valuable in my role as Program Chair.
Being a program chair is not unlike being a store owner. I have inventory (courses), and I have customers (students). I also have stakeholders (university administration) that support my “store”. It is important as a store owner to maintain inventory that is desired by my customers. I was just speaking with a finance industry expert about the need to evolve curriculum to keep up with the changing requirements of the finance industry. The links contained within occupational trends provides further support in my attempts to update curriculum.
The second area of value is around my own career viability. As I mentioned in my introduction, I am looking to make a jump from academics to career consulting. It is critical that I know what the occupational demands are for a career consultant, and if I saw a trend away from individuals seeking career advice, I too might want to consider my jump to this area.
To conclude this post, I would like to reflect on how this component relates to the work of a Career Counselor. A Career Counselor must be cognizant in several factors of career trends. It is not only the duty of a Career Counselor to be able to assess where someone is career wise, but also offer insights as to the potential for career growth. According to Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey (2012), careers and career choices will continue to experience more dynamic change, hence, the need to keep up with emerging trends.

NCDA Exploration
One of the areas of focus by the National Career Development Association (NCDA) is career convergence using the career resource store. It is important to understand that NCDA has played a key role in offering selected products to enhance progress and advance knowledge for all career professionals. As a result of change in technology, the dynamism of the organizational environment has changed significantly. It has become hence necessary for organizations to identify the areas where changes are required and make appropriate steps toward acquainting the employees with appropriate skills (Niles & Bowlsbey, 2012). For instance, structural unemployment has increased in the modern times as a result of the widening mismatch between the skills required by the employers and those that are possessed by the potential employees. NCDA’s career resource store is aimed at sealing these disparities by identifying the areas in the organization where change is required to make the necessary skill modifications.
One of the primary functions of career counselors is to inform people about the labor markets. They examine the organizational records, achievement tests, workforce dynamism among many other critical aspects to issue guidance on the labor market. In other words, career counselors play a key role in helping students to make career choices depending on the condition of the labor market. For instance, the people who have pursued degrees in business management are required to have accounting background. It is for this reason that the career counselor will conduct aptitude tests and as well administer interviews to advice the person in question regarding the best combination to undertake as per the requirements and state of the labor market. The NCDA’s resource center contains this information that is critical when it comes to making career plans. The latest changes in the labor markets must be documented and incorporated in the training programs aimed at equipping job seekers with the right skills as required by the employers.

I agree with you that we have to prepare students and help them to understand the combination of skills needed in order to succeed. Since you mentioned students, I am wondering if it will take more than just helping them to understand the combination of skills needed to obtain employment in the future.
Many students do not know what they want to be when they grow up (for that matter, neither do I). Therefore they may go into a field that does not give them passion. The younger generation continues to seek purpose in life. What are your thoughts about career counselors helping the client to find their purpose in life? Is this beyond the scope of practice?

Hi Yvette,
Good job on your post.
I kind of found myself lost in the NCDA website due to all the places and resources available. Although my short visit was the first, it certainly will not be my last.
What I find interesting about all this is your mention of shifting labor markets. What I often wonder is if educational institutions look too far in the past to determine the right classes and degrees to offer.

My reply got cut off, so I am going to continue here. Sorry about that.
Going back to my line of questioning, should those that provide career counciling services look to past labor trends, or forcasted future labor needs to help clients determine approparite occulpations?
