Assignment 3: Literature review
Semester 2, 2018
Goals:
§ To gain knowledge of leading research findings into approaches that can be used to improve the safety of safety-critical systems.
§ To develop skills in literature reviews and preparing written reports.
Deliverables
Prepare a 2000-2500 word review recent research that describes how system safety can be improved with the adoption of new or enhanced approaches that focus on ONE of the following areas:
§ Inherently safe design.
§ Defence in depth.
§ Human factors.
§ Management and governance systems. (e)
You must choose a different topic and use different sources from the one you selected for Assignment
1. Alternative topic areas can be negotiated with the course coordinator.
The report must include the following sections:
§ Introduction explaining purpose of report.
§ Description of research and approaches advocated to improve system safety.
§ Application – at least one example of where the approaches has been applied.
§ Critique of the research and approaches.
§ Recommendations that industry practitioners should consider when choosing whether to apply the approach.
All sources of information must be clearly referenced. Evidence of both breadth and depth of reading is expected in the report. At least one published article or book chapter should be cited for each of the 3-4 techniques on which you focus. Full bibliographic references must be given for each paper.
Submission
Due Friday 26th October, 2018 at 4pm. Late assignment will attract a penalty as per ECP details. All written submission will be submitted through TurnItIn.

Marking
This assignment is worth 20% of the overall grade for this course. It will be marked out of 25 marks as per the breakdown is indicated below and then converted to a percentage.
