Task This task consists of 3 parts which can be done in any order. (Main relevant criteria below)
Part 1 : Write 200 – 500 words in response to this statement : “The chemistry of materials is a dead end –
we now know everything there is to know”. You may argue that the statement is true or false, but must
support your statements with properly referenced evidence. It is not acceptable to be indecisive and
argue both true and false, or maybe. (KCU 1, 2, 3; EC 1, 2, 3)
Part 2 Design a short experiment to test or measure a property of a material. You may choose any
property and any material, You do not have to perform this experiment. Your report will be around
600 (yr 11) – 700 (yr 12) words. (KCU 3; IP 1,2,3; EC3)
Part 3 : Research how the chemistry of a material determines its properties and makes that material of use
for the purpose it is used for. You may choose any material. You will write up your report {around 600
(yr 11) – 700 (yr 12) words}, and present it to the class in a 3-4 minute talk. (KCU 1,2,3; EC 1,2,3)
Remember that your response is to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of chemistry, and is to be
much more than a few randomly downloaded pages or randomly selected references. All sources MUST be
properly referenced in a bibliography.
Conditions: Answers To be neatly hand-written or typed. This task sheet is to be stapled to the
front of the final version. Marked drafts and journal notes are to be
stapled to the back of the final version.
Book Reference to text or notes and literature research is required.
Drafts Year 11 – two drafts may be submitted before the end of week 8
Year 12 – one draft may be submitted before the end of week 8
Group Individual work. Year 11 may work in pairs for part 2 experiment only.
Time 12 lessons (18 hours) of class time will be allocated to this task
Word Limits Year 11 – approximately 800-1000 words in total
Year 12 – approximately 1000-1500 words in total
Due Date Drafts must be submitted before the end of week 8.
Final version must be submitted before or during class in Week 9.
Presentations must be done in class in week 9, or earlier by arrangement.
