Crystals of proteins can be used in Crystallography to generate atomic resolution structures.
How near to atomic resolution these structures can get is dependent on the quality of the crystal
created, and as a result, on the diffraction pattern produced from that crystal. Around 1
Angstrom would be considered a really excellent protein atomic resolution structure, but
typically this would be around 2.5 Angstroms. Ultimately it is the electron density map that is
generated from the maths used to solve a protein crystal structure that can tell us something of
the atomic structure.
