Explain the role of the dissertation chair and dissertation committee member. What factors should you consider when searching for potential faculty to serve on your committee?

Example 1
Walden University (2014) states that the dissertation committee is unique to doctoral programs and supports the student in completing a high quality and relevant dissertation research study. The committee includes a committee chair and committee member that the student selects. The chair makes sure that the dissertation meets all Walden, student and discipline requirements. The committee member supports the chair and may serve as a content expert or methodology expert or both. Overall, the committee member supports the chair in their area of expertise. URR also joins as a committee member, but is not chosen by the student. The URR is responsible for a reliable quality assurance process.
Walden University (2014) provides guidance that the chair must be from the student’s department. Herndon (n.d.) recommends considering specialty and “match” when identifying potential committee members to contact. I chose my chair based on the above factors. First, I had him for my quantitative analysis class and appreciated his feedback and especially his prompts to analyze the data in different ways. I enjoyed his instructional style, appreciated his challenges, and feel that I will benefit from his instruction and guidance during the dissertation process. Secondly, after his Ph.D. in psychology and statistics, he worked for one of the largest health insurance consultants in the world conducting data analysis. Since my dissertation is in the area of health insurance, this seemed like a good fit. He will be my content and methodology expert. I chose my committee member because I respect her area of research, have enjoyed her academic papers and appreciated her approach in class. She also obtained her Ph.D. in I-O psychology and I believe that she will be a good mentor for me in the field of I-O psychology in general.

At its core, the Walden University dissertation demonstrates numerous things that include commitments to improving ones level of professional practice, and addressing issues with regards to social change (Walden University, 2016). In addition to that, the dissertation process also validates a students comprehension of and commitment to the critical elements of academic honestly and scholarly integrity throughout the process (p. 2). And one of the ways to ensure that these conditions are met and objectives are reached is by the oversight and assistance of a dissertation supervisory committee, which is specific and unique to the doctoral level of education. The Walden University dissertation committee is comprised of three members, committee chair, committee member, and a committee university research reviewer (URR), with each of them having specific roles and functions.
The committee chair has overall responsibility to ensure that the dissertation complies with all of the academic requirements established by the university, as well as making sure the committee is fulfilling their obligation to the student and the process (Walden University, 2012). The committee member assists the chair by providing advice and guidance with respect to dissertation content, methodology, and style, while also serving in the capacity of a liaison (p. 2). And finally the URR, who is appointed to a students committee by the respective program director of their designee, provides independent feedback on the dissertation from the viewpoint of an independent third party (p. 3). The committee chair and member are nominated on university forms, after acceptance of the position by the specific faculty, and approved by the student’s program director. And while the dissertation supervisory committee provides an extremely valuable service, it is the ultimate responsibility of the student to ensure that the work gets completed in the appropriate manner.
With all of that being the case, there is a couple of things that a student must consider when deciding on and selecting committee members. One of the first elements that have to be considered is that a prospective committee member must have expertise in the students content area (Walden University, 2012). As an example, a student in the psychology program should be searching for and communicating with faculty members from the Department of Psychology versus the Department of Education. The next element for consideration is that one of the prospective committee members must have experience in the dissertation methodology (p. 4). This aspect simply means that if the student is conducting a qualitative study, then one of the committee members must have experience in qualitative methodology.

According to the Walden (2014) “Doctoral Committee Members: Roles and Desired Practices” there is a team of faculty that are afforded by the school to assist in accomplishing the completion of the student’s scholarly degree. The Committee Chair (Walden, 2012) operates as the main contact between the scholar, and faculty that offers initial firsthand assistance to the student. The factors to consider when choosing a committee is to find scientists in your field of study. According to Walden (2015) one has to be assigned the one is specialized in that particular subject and the alternate must be researcher, still anyone can be appointed for dual functions.
These are some conditions that I have listed from previous Residencies and horror stories I have heard that I would like to share that I thought would be good advice for our dissertation journey;
Factors of consideration for Dissertation and Committee Roles–
provide regular and open communication about project changes to committee throughout dissertation process
provide regular communication schedule and abide by it as much as possible by agreed upon methods (teleconference, email, texts, etc.)
be honest about what is expected about scholarly projects and timelines
be able to get along professionally about revisions and expectations – aka don’t take it personal, it’s a learning process
students should keep standing appointments, don’t be afraid to reach out and cancel if emergencies arise, be respectful of your team’s schedule
provide clear expectations about the project (including rewrites) every week or as soon as possible.
I understand that the Dissertation process will not be easy, but I look forward to the challenge. The Walden classes, faculty and resources have and still provide a solid foundation for the support necessary to move forward towards my goals. I have enjoyed the journey and feel comfortable saying that Walden faculty have provided me with the tools to take these next steps to start my research successfully towards my dissertation.
