Both the Branded film and the Coakley chapter highlight gender inequality in the coverage of women’s sports and the manner in which female athletes are portrayed. Now that you are an informed sport sociologist, and you understand the power that media has in shaping gender ideologies, you will apply the four (4) frames of gender equity that are presented in the Shaw and Frisby (2006) paper to media coverage of women and women’s sports.
For this synthesis paper, you are to provide (1) a brief introduction to gender inequality in media coverage and (2) strategies to fix the inequality through each of the 4 frames of gender equity.
Organize your response in the following format:
- Summarize the inequality that is evident in the coverage of women’s sports and the manner in which female athletes are portrayed in the media.
- Provide an introduction to the 4 frames of gender equity, then visit each frame separately to propose a solution (with examples) to gender inequality in the media through the lens of the frame:
A. Summarize the logics behind frame 1, “Fix the women”, and provide a solution to gender inequality in media coverage through the lens of this frame (e.g., tell the athletes who earn their living on media endorsements that they shouldn’t pose in photos that objectify them).
B. Summarize the logics behind frame 2, “Value the feminine”, and provide a solution to gender inequality in media coverage through the lens of this frame.
C. Summarize the logics behind frame 3, “Provide equal opportunity”, and provide a solution to gender inequality in media coverage through the lens of this frame. For this frame, your solution must follow the format of Title IX, with an official position statement and a 3-part test (or something like it) to serve as benchmarks for gender equity in media coverage.
D. Summarize the logics behind frame 4, and provide a solution to gender inequality in media coverage through the lens of this frame. For this frame, you must provide at least 2 specific strategies to “change the discourse” and examples of each strategy.
