Purpose of the study

The study aims at identifying the roles played by both the intrinsic and extrinsic motivational element on athletes who are in teams. This study will also seek to find out which of these two sources of motivation have a great impact on the individual and the team performance of athletes. This research study will seek to analyze how the intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors affect the performance of athletes.

Participants and Sample

The respondents in this research study are the athletes whose sports are considered a team sport between the ages of 18 -30 who forms the universal sample for this study. However, the team sports in the county are selected due to the convenience of availability for the research study. Within the teams in the county, the research study will use two teams of both genders for the study. It is expected that each team will have at least 20 team players who will form part of the sample participants.

The selection of the two teams to form the sample of the research will be conducted on a random sampling among the teams within the county. To select the employees who are to participate in the study, a purposive sampling will be used where the players who have an active role in the team performance.

Instrument and Instrumentation

Several data collection instruments will be used to collect the data. A questionnaire will form the primary data collection tool. The participant’s consent will be sought before they are handed the data collection tool. The respondent will be asked to acknowledge their consent by signing a consent on the first page of the tool.

An interview guide will also be used to supplement the data collection questionnaire. This interview guide will direct the interviewers of the questions to ask the interviewee. Before participating in the interview, the interviewee’s consent will be sought to ensure that they are participating in the interview on a voluntary basis.

Ensuring the validity and reliability of the two tests above will be crucial. The validity of the instruments will be guaranteed by fine-tuning the tools to ensure that they collect data as they are supposed to asses. A preliminary validity test will be undertaken to validate the data collection tools. Re-asking some of the questions in the questionnaire will be used to test the reliability and validity of the data collection tools. The reliability will be an important element to ensure consistency of the data collection (Ali & Bhaskar, 2016). The similar tool will be used among all participants to ensure consistency of the tool.

Both data collection tools will be designed in such a way that they collect data concerning the relationship between the independent and the dependent variables of the research. Such a design will allow for more accessible analysis of the data and show the relationship between the variables (Alreck & Settle, 2003).

Procedures

The procedures for conducting the study to allow replication will include reaching out to at least 90% of the sample so that the sample used in the study to be sizeable in comparison with the universe. There will enough time allowed for the data collection process. Once data is collected, the questionnaires will be assessed for missing information, unclear data, as well as ambiguous data. The incomplete questionnaires will not be included in the data analysis.

To ensure replicability of the study to other cases, the study will ensure an external validity is achieved by ensuring that the sample is representative of the universe regarding gender. The study will also ensure representation of the various ethnic groups present in the team as well as ensure that the team dynamics such as age, experience, and rank in the team are well represented in the study (Creswell, 2008). The internal validity of the study will be ensured by eliminating the personal biases of the researcher during the interviewing process.
