AT3: Ethical Dilemma Analysis
Key Information The following key information is an extract from the XBR210 Unit Outline
Assessment weight: 40% of total grade
Task description
Ethical Dilemma Analysis
On MyLO, you will find a selection of ‘what if’ scenarios relating to the ideas studied during the unit. A ‘what if’ scenario asks you to imagine something that has not yet occurred and that is not yet part of real life, e.g. What if you awoke one day and found a time device similar to the one featured in the film In Time embedded in your body?
Choose one (1) only of these and respond to the ethical dilemma presented in that scenario. Draw on the materials studied during the unit in doing so.
Discuss ways in which individuals and society can overcome the difficulties that are presented in the scenarios given or, in fact, turn the difficulties presented into a benefit.
You should feel free to draw on the readings, films, anime, podcasts and documentary material etc listed for the unit.
Your chosen scenario must be uploaded as a visual clip (of no more than 5 minutes) to the MyLO assignments tool – formerly Dropbox.

Choose one (1) only of the scenarios given below and respond to the ethical dilemma presented in that scenario. Draw on the materials studied during the unit in doing so. Discuss ways in which individuals and society can overcome the difficulties that are presented in the scenario or, in fact, turn the difficulties presented into a social benefit.
When preparing your response, you should feel free to draw on your choice of all material from the films, anime, readings, activities, podcasts and documentary material presented during the unit.
Scenario #1: What if you were the head of a research facility in which mutants were subject to experiments? How would you treat these mutants? What principles would guide your management of the project? What if your research facility employed robots and/or cyborgs? Include an explanation of the role of the robots in your facility.
Scenario #2: What if a group of seemingly rogue mutants were planning to mutate other humans in order that they (the mutants) could feel accepted? You have the power to intervene and you suspect that the mutants are not actually rogue but merely seeking acceptance in a society that excludes and mistreats them. What action would you take? What would you do to ensure the general society accepted the mutated beings?
Scenario #3: What if you were the partner of a cyborg that was determined to confront a supreme form of evil? How would you advise that cyborg (you should assume some sort of gender difference between yourself and the cyborg – male, female, transgender etc)? Would you try to prevent the cyborg’s confronting a force against which s/he had no possible chance of victory? If so, how? What might you suggest s/he do instead of face certain defeat? What if you had been programmed with a limited amount of time in your life and that time was running out? Would you attempt to ‘steal’ more time to assist your partner?
Scenario #4: What if for some reason (perhaps but not necessarily to do with your gender identity) you felt that you did not belong in the body that you were born with? What if you, yourself, felt confused and if you knew that you were causing distress to the people around you? You have done everything you can to conform, but with no success. To what extent would you be prepared to have technological intervention to assist you to feel that your identity matched that of your body? You can draw upon any technological intervention, medical or otherwise, that you wish.
Scenario #5: What if in a post-apocalyptic world, the remaining human life appears to be threatened by an influx of mutated beings? These beings appear to be destroying the remaining environment and presenting a threat to all other life. You have the opportunity to intervene and want to bring a reconciliation between humanity and the mutants. What would you do to bring about this reconciliation?
Steps to Complete this Task To complete this task you should:
1. Select one (1) only ‘what if’ scenario 2. Individually record your response as a 3-5 minute (maximum of 5min) video to the scenario presented 3. Submit your video to the AT3 Assignments folder (as a video file)
As noted a number of times during the unit, you do not need to be a first language English speaker to complete this task successfully. Nevertheless, you do need to ensure that your spoken delivery is clear and that the meaning of your presentation can be understood by listeners.
Using your smartphone Using your laptop and camera Using a digital camera (video camera or still camera with video capacity).
All of these devices usually have the capacity to record a video file of a sufficient quality for this assessment task. More tips on using these devices will be provided.
