Introduction
Over the years, globalization has provided numerous opportunities in different sectors of the economy. Technological advancement has brought a tremendous effect in the education sector. One of the revolutionary achievements of modern technology is the launching of electronic learning, popularly known as e-learning. According to Bransford and Cocking (322), in the recent years, most universities worldwide have been providing online courses to students in different parts of the world. Globalization has ensured that students learn in different universities without physically attending the learning institution. This paper examines the ideology of e-learning as well as its advantages and disadvantages emphasizing on the limitations of e-learning.
Limitations of E-learning
a) Low quality education
Since its inception, e-learning has received mixed reactions from different education stakeholders. Despite the fact that e-learning provides convenient means of acquiring knowledge from different learning institution, e-learning has led to the widespread of low quality education. Students who learn through the internet usually do not have the opportunity to interact physically interact with their lecturers. Hence the learners may not get in-depth information concerning a particular site. Moreover, the students are left on their own to study since the tutors are not available to explain different concepts physically.
b) Inadequate interaction between students and tutors
The major problem that is facing internet learning is the low interaction between learners and the tutors. Since the two parties are usually in different geographical locations, the only means of interaction is through emails, websites and Skype. These modern communication methods are not effective since they lack a convincing power. Inadequate interaction may lead to poor performance since the student learns only when he or she feels like continuing with a particular course.
c) Expensive form of education
E-learning is a very expensive form of education. Most universities charges high fees despite the low quality education. Moreover, a student has to look for a means of accessing the internet hence one has to acquire a personal computer or a laptop as well as the additional cost of internet charges. Unlike attending learning institution in person, e-learning therefore is a very expensive way of gaining knowledge and may be out of bounds to students from under-developed nations.
d) Difficulty in supervising examinations
Due to the existence of a geographical barrier between the student and the tutor, it therefore becomes a problem for the tutor to supervise examinations. The teachers are usually left with no option other than to issue exams that are delivered after a specified period of time. These exams therefore do not portray the exact capability or the progress of a particular student. Such a scenario therefore leads to issuing of degrees or certificates that fail to portray the capability of a learner. Many employers have decried the emergence of graduates who do not possess skills in their specific field.
Advantages of E-learning
a) Convenient learning
E-learning provides a convenient way of undertaking courses without necessarily joining institution that are located in different parts of the world. A student may also choose a university that he or she likes and learn through the internet (Reigeluth, 55). This convenience has led to the popularization of e-learning all over the world.
b) Short completion period
Unlike getting admission to local universities, e-learning ensures that learners complete their courses in a very short duration. This situation has helped those who want to upgrade their education standards for example, from undergraduate to postgraduate studies.
In conclusion, despite the advantages of e-learning, the program has led to low quality education. Learners should therefore attend local universities and as the same time enroll for online courses in different universities worldwide.
