1. Choose an infectious disease. You may find ideas from Chapters 21 – 26 in your textbook or from one of the Infectious Diseases sites under External Links.
2. Get your disease approved by your instructor. Only one person can do a particular disease.
3. Research that disease and the organism that causes it. Find the following information:
the name of the pathogenic organism and what it is (bacterium, virus, fungus, protozoan, or helminth) how the organism can be cultured and isolated (if your organism is a bacterium), the structure and life cycle of the pathogen (if your organism is a virus, fungus, protozoa, or helminth) how it is acquired (where it is found, how it is transmitted) mechanism by which the organism causes disease signs and symptoms of the disease (what the patient exhibits or experiences) diagnosis of the disease (how does the doctor determine what disease it is) treatment of the disease prevention
4. Report your results in the form of a narrated Powerpoint presentation. Credit any graphics used in your presentation with the website they were obtained from.
5. Prepare a written annotated bibliography of the references you used in your research. See information below.
