21 May WHAT EVIDENCE DOES THE AUTHOR PRESENT?
Discuss the main issues about the readings such as important events or bodies or roles or problems the author is trying to portray etc. Give your reaction to the assigned readings. Show that you understand the opinion, main ideas. Identify all the basic information about the readings including the title of the reading, topic or subject of the reading. In other words, tell what the reading is about. What are the strength and weaknesses etc. Add your reactions-how do you react to the piece on a personal level, did the reading hold to your interest? why or why not? did the reading bother or annoy you? Questions to ask: What is the main problem or issue that the author is addressing? What is the author’s central claim, argument, or point? What assumptions does the author make? What evidence does the author present? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the text? IMPORTANT: Apply the reaction paper by considering the readings collectively and not just summarizing and reacting to each of them in separate paragraphs. How do they relate to one another? Do the authors agree? Disagree? Address different aspects of an issue? Formulate a problem in different ways? In what way (if any) does the information or argument of one text strengthen or weaken the argument of others? Does integrating the claims in two or more of the texts advance your understanding of a larger issue? This assignment is for a political science course i’m taking called international relations in the middle east. Below is a course description in order to give the writer a better idea of the assignment. This course is designed to cover major aspects of interstate relations of the Middle East. These include the policies of major international actors towards the region, the relations between Middle East countries themselves and their policies towards the outside world. Different theories and approaches will be applied and tested towards this purpose. The rational behind this class is to develop an overall organizing perspective that can help explain international politics in and regarding the Middle East. The nature of this course requires continuous movement back and forth between theory and reality, history and current affairs. As both a political science and area study course, theories here are not presented in isolation of the actual regional and international realities. There will be 4 readings in which each one should be roughly reacted to in 100 words.
The Readings are:
1. F. Gregory Cause, III, The International Politics of the Gulf, Ch. 13 in Fawcett (ed.)
2. Bahgat Korany and Moataz A. Fattah, Irreconcilable Role-Parteners? Saudi Foreign Policy between the Ulama and the US, in Bahgat Korany and Ali E. Hilal Dessouki (eds.), The Foreign Policy of Arab States: The Challenge of Globalization, pp. 45-66
3.Abdul-Monem al-Mashat, Politics of Constructive Engagement: The Foreign Policy of the United Arab Emirates, in Bahgat Korany and Ali E. Hilal Dessouki (eds.), The Foreign Policy of Arab States: The Challenge of Globalization, pp. 457-480
