PRIMARY SOURCE ANALYSIS PAPERS
You must write on TWO (2) of the following projects for a maximum of 50 points each. Please see the note on plagiarism at the bottom of the page. Each of the following links will lead to the assignment descriptions and documents that you'll need. Please make sure you read the instructions and understand what you're supposed to be doing!

First Analysis Paper
Please pick ONE of the following topics for your first Analysis Paper:
1/ Using the 1900 Census

Historians often use quantitative data (numbers) to support their arguments. Since the first U.S. Census in 1790, the government has collected a great deal of data about the social and economic conditions of the country -- this information can be an invaluable resource for the study of our past.

This assignment requires you to respond to three prompts which you will address by applying data from the 1900 Census. Each response should be a minimum of two substantial paragraphs. Please be sure to clearly support your assertions with specific numbers and statistics from the census data. Note that this is not a formal essay -- you don't need an introduction or conclusion, just the responses in the three following sections.

For each section you should also include a map of a relevant data point. To obtain these maps go to: http://mapserver.lib.virginia.edu/
Then:
1. Select the 1900 Census
2. Choose a data item from the list and click "Submit Query"
3. Click "Map It!" from the top of the data column
4. Download the map by right clicking it and saving it as a picture. When you insert it into your report, make sure you have a label indicating what is being mapped.

Please respond to the following three prompts, using the instructions above:
• In what ways does the data from the 1900 census confirm or expand what you learned in the lesson on the Last West? Do you see any ways in which you think it contradicts what you learned? You should have at least two different points of comparison based upon the economic, social, or population characteristics of this region. Please be sure to support your assertion with specific evidence from the 1900 census and include a map of a relevant data set and an explanation of what the map shows about this region.
• In what ways does the data from the 1900 census confirm or expand what you learned in the lesson on the New South? Do you see any ways in which you think it contradicts what you learned? You should have at least two different points of comparison based upon the economic, social, or population characteristics of this region. Please be sure to support your assertion with specific evidence from the 1900 census and include a map of a relevant data set and an explanation of what the map shows about this region.
• In what ways does the data from the 1900 census confirm or expand what you learned in the lessons on Industrialization and Immigration and Urbanization? Do you see any ways in which you think it contradicts what you learned? You should have at least two different points of comparison based upon the economic, social, or population characteristics of this region. Please be sure to support your assertion with specific evidence from the 1900 census and include a map of a relevant data set and an explanation of what the map shows about this region.

2/ The Debate over Immigration

In the early 20th century Americans debated hotly whether immigration should be restricted. Read through the documents below and then, in an essay of 1000-1500 words, compare and contrast the key arguments they contain for and against immigration restriction. Overall, which side you think presents a better case? You should have at least three specific areas of disagreement (argument and counter-argument). Your arguments should be clearly supported by brief examples or quotes taken from the primary source documents provided. This is NOT a research assignment -- use only the documents provided.

Final Essay
From the following list of essay topics please pick one and write an essay of approximately 1000 words in response. When you title your essay, please make sure it refers to the question that you're answering, for instance, "Civil Rights" This paper will be submitted via Turnitin.com (See instructions at top)
1. You’re an American living in the year 1940. Suddenly, you’re abducted by aliens and transported forward in time to the year 2014. Write an essay in which you analyze the key economic, social, political, and cultural changes in the U.S. since 1940. How is this “new” America different from the nation you left behind? Try to focus on the big picture, not trivia.
2. Franklin Roosevelt;s New Deal program had a significant impact upon American society. How did the New Deal make long-term changes in the political, economic, and social landscape of the United States. Do you think this change was inherently radical or conservative? In answering this question make sure you're looking at long-term implications of the New Deal, not just how it sought to deal with the immediate problem of the Depression.
3. Wars often have a significant impact upon the domestic development of a nation. Analyze how World War Two and the subsequent Cold War created economic, political, and social changes inside the United States between 1941 and 1989. Your answer should relate to the INTERNAL development of the United States, not our relationship with other countries.
