Throughout this course, you will learn of many different disease states and their effects on humanity over the ages. You will read various accounts of how humans have had to deal with the impact of disease on individuals, families, communities and society’s. Sometimes it is hard for us not to judge the choices made by governments and individuals with regard to housing of the ill, medicines provided (or not), and even graver decisions. For this assignment, you will analyze a particular issue, the various pros and cons of the problem and the ethical issues surrounding each. You will be required to formulate a plan to solve the problem and defend your reasoning, from an ethical standpoint.
Topics Choose one of the following scenarios to write about:
1. Over 20% of the student population and staff at the University have tested positive for Influenza H1N1. Discuss the implications of this and what measures (if any) the University Administration should take. Utilize the evaluation points as you formulate not only what the University should do, but your own stance on this issue.
2. During the middle ages, very little was known about how diseases were spread. With this in mind, discuss what communities did to try to curb the spread of The Plague. Were these the only options open to them? How would we have handled these situations today? Were they “wrong” in how they handled the prevention of the spread of Plague? Utilize the evaluation points in your arguments for or against these issues.
3. DDT was a wonder chemical in killing mosquitos that transmit the devastating disease Malaria. However, by banning its use, were millions of people sentenced to death by this disease? And to what end? To save the Bald Eagle? Where would you stand on this issue? Utilize the evaluation points as you defend your stance.
4. In the past, humans were regularly used to test medicines and vaccines in the early stages of development (Smallpox, anthrax, and yellow fever come to mind). Today, human testing, or “clinical trials” are the last step in testing of a medicine or vaccine, as a rule. Animal testing is completed first, although there is possibly even more controversy over animal testing. Discuss the ethical dilemma scientists and governments are faced with today with regard to testing medicines in people and/or animals. You may address both issues, or simply one of the two.
5. Vaccination of your children against communicable diseases. Yes or no? Why or why not? To what end? Is it for their benefit or society’s? Explore the issue.
6. Create your own! Come up with a scenario, either real or fictional (#1 was a fictional scenario), than write your paper. You will still need to utilize the evaluation points listed in your writing.

· 3-5 full pages, double-spaced,typed. Pictures are fine, but will not be counted as part of the page space used. Remember, if you insert a picture, chart or graph, you need to refer to it in your text. Proper grammar and spelling is assumed.
