She alleged that the policy was demeaning and discriminatory in that men were not required nor allowed to wear makeup. However, much to the chagrin of many women’s rights activists, the court upheld Harrah’s requirement for females to wear makeup. Therefore the court also ruled that Harrah’s was justified in their firing of the employee for refusing to follow the company policy. Members of the hotel industry association in California hailed the ruling because it gave an employer the right to have grooming standards, which they feel are important in service industries (Colb, 2001; Osterman, 2005).
