Topic  1.  In 2 fairy tales of your choice (from the above selection) identify and explain the underlying theme of adolescents and developing sexuality/sexual curiosity, showing possible implications and presenting textual evidence in the form of direct citations from both the tales and the critical sources (MLA format). Demonstrate how patriarchal society condemns female sexuality and punishes female curiosity.

Instructions for research

In your paper, try to present each secondary source in a signal phrase (MLA format).

Keep in mind that it is essential to use both primary (fairy tales) and secondary sources (critical articles) for your citations and textual evidence. Secondary sources should only support and enrich your analysis of the fairy tales (primary sources)!

Process Writing:

2 drafts (or more) are mandatory!

The 1st draft (A HARD COPY) of your research paper is due on the individually scheduled date for an individual conference and my one-on-one feedback! Your 1st draft should be at least 2 full pages, with citations in MLA format in each paragraph. Print it out and bring to the scheduled conference.

Your first drafts will be graded, in order for me to establish your preliminary mid-term grade that must be submitted soon to WebAdvisor. Be prepared to see me for mandatory individual conferences.  If you miss the conference essential for going over your 1st draft, your grade for the final draft will be very low (around a D). let me know in advance if you have serious reasons for rescheduling the conference. In addition, NO ESSAY will be accepted and graded without a required fully developed 1st draft on at least 2 full pages (or more).

Remember that your 1st draft is NOT a handwritten rough draft–there should be nothing rough about it! Instead, your 1st draft should be typed, developed, polished, proofread, and supported by meaningful direct MLA citations in each and every paragraph (essay body). A Works Cited page is not required in the first draft. No conclusion is needed in the 1st draft. While you are not yet required to integrate research-related materials (secondary sources), it is strongly recommended to visit FDU library and start working, or even integrating, direct citations from the reserved secondary sources (front desk, second floor)! Do not forget to bring your Student ID to the library.

Secondary sources (critical articles and reserved books—see a posted “list of sources for fairy tales” in Assignments/Webcampus) should NOT be paraphrased, rather directly cited (in MLA format)—each source must be cited at least twice or more. Make sure that your research paper demonstrates serious work with secondary sources (reserved research materials).

The 2nd (final) draft is usually due one week after receiving my feedback—the exact day will be announced.

Requirements for the final draft:

2 tales from the list (no more than 2 tales!)

6 full pages and several lines (or more)

Integration of 3 or more secondary sources (use only reserved books – left for you at FDU library front desk). Each source must be logically quoted at least twice (thus, at least 6 meaningful direct citations from the reserved books to support your analysis).  Analysis of each tale should integrate a sufficient amount of relevant research (several supportive direct citations from the reserved books to enrich your ideas on each tale). Three (3) critical sources MUST be chosen from the reserved books in the library; the remaining scholarly sources (if needed) may be of your choice from FDU databases. Remember that your sources should be reliable and serious, such as a critical article or a book written by an expert.

Primary sources (2 fairy tales): Your final draft should integrate at least 5 meaningful direct citations from each tale (10 supportive in-text citations altogether from both tales.

Your FINAL draft should be submitted in 2 WAYS:

In your opening paragraph coin a clearly defined thesis that states or implies your main idea (related to both tales) that will be explored in the research paper.

Each paragraph following your introduction should incorporate direct one or more MLA citations. Observe the format for the “body of the paragraph in an analytical essay” (organization within a paragraph—see Webcampus/Documents).

Font: Times New Roman; Double Spaced; Letter Size 12; Standard Margins: 1 inch

Works Cited page, documenting primary (tales) and secondary (research-related materials), constitutes a separate page – which is NOT a part of the required number of pages

Proper MLA format

Double spaced
