1.One of the most interesting and current topics of discussion in leadership and management theory is emotional intelligence. In essence it proposes that good managers and leaders are able to understand and control their own emotions in addition to understanding and working with the emotions of others in a positive way.

Read the definition and discussion in the textbook about emotional intelligence and use your own words to define what you think emotional intelligence is and why it is an important management trait. Provide an example of when you have or wished you had used emotional intelligence in a work or life situation.

I’ll give my own example first. At one point in my career I was the only female in the senior leadership team. There was another senior leader who clearly didn’t value my opinion. My sense was that he really didn’t like having a woman leader. Additionally I had come into the leadership role as an outside candidate and he had spent his entire career in this one organization. I often thought he was somewhat intimidated by that and he clearly had the “we don’t do it that way here” attitude. I was an outsider and that was that!

At any rate, one time too many he cut me off when I was speaking and belittled my suggestions and I lost my temper. I did not wait for him to finish after he interrupted me and pretty angrily said “I get to have an opinion too and whether you agree with it or not really does not matter to me. At least be professional enough to allow me to finish my sentence.” Everyone was shocked and quiet for the longest time. Clearly I had not used my emotional intelligence. Knowing there was a problem, I should have tried to make friends long before this situation got out of hand. Failing that I should have brought this to the attention of our supervisor. And failing any resolution there, I should have initiated a dialogue among the leadership team about how we were going to treat each other and become a true team. I knew there was a problem and I didn’t deal with it until I lost my temper. Not a good example of leadership.

2. Starting on page 351 our textbook describes barriers to effective communication. Select one of these barriers, explain it fully, give an example of where it might limit effective communication. How will you go about ensuring that your own communication is not affected by these barriers in both providing and receiving information?

Perhaps you can also think of other barriers. I know one I am guilty of and that is impatience. When someone is talking to me and just won’t get to the point, I sometimes get very impatient and either space out and stop listening or I’ll get very anxious and fidgety leading them to believe I don’t care about what they are saying. I have really had to learn to listen patiently. I also had to learn to be alright with a few seconds or minutes of silence and let the other person think through their response. Sometimes I wouldn’t be patient and then I would end up talking instead of listening.
