Background
Many leaders and leadership researchers believe that leadership involves self-knowledge above all else. You have to know who you are, they suggest, if you are to interact with and lead others successfully. So, for example, you have to know what traits, skills, characteristics, and attitudes you have; how you behave in different situations; how you get along with different kinds of people; what your moral/ethical position is on various issues and the degree to which you think a leader should be other-oriented; how you use power and politics in leadership situations; the ways in which you effectively (or ineffectively) motivate and influence others; how well you work as an individual and as a member of a team or organization; how creative and innovative you are and the degree to which you can inspire others to be creative and innovative; how well you communicate with others through various means and how well you can mediate and resolve conflict; the extent to which you can think and lead strategically; what your capacity is to manage knowledge and help others do so; how sensitive and responsive you are to gender issues and to cultural and national differences; and how well you can both help others become leaders and bow out of leadership roles when the time is right.
This course has included many elements that have encouraged you to look at yourself, to recognize your strengths and your weaknesses, and to understand areas in which you may need additional development. The final paper provides an opportunity for you to bring all of this together and to look toward your future.
This paper is designed as an opportunity for you to synthesize what you have learned about yourself as a leader or potential leader during the course and–given what you have learned–to outline a developmental plan that will help you become the leader you want to be. It is NOT intended to be redundant with any self-assessment you’ve already done in the course; that is, it is NOT merely a cut-and-paste of what you have completed thus far. On the contrary, its purpose is to help you integrate what you have learned and to bring all of your course learning together in an inventive, creative way in order to propose a future plan. The activity is about you and your future as a leader; it should be both challenging and fun.
Assignment
Write an 8- to 10-page paper (a total of approximately 2000 to 2500 words).
The paper should include:
- An integrative, summary statement of your strengths and weaknesses as a leader or potential leader (approximately 3-4 pages, or 800 to 1000 words)
- A developmental plan that describes what you can do in the next five years to enhance your capacity to serve as a leader (approximately 5 to 6 pages, or 1250 to 1500 words). This plan should address what you set out in the summary statement described above: that is, it should detail how
you can use and even build on your current strengths while it also sets out how you can eliminate or reduce your weaknesses. Be sure to include some consideration of the broad context in which you lead or would like to lead.
Important note: Your paper should refer to the concepts, theoretical perspectives, dynamics, skills, and practices that have been important elements of the course. If you quote from or paraphrase the research, thoughts, or writings of another, be sure to give proper credit to that person.
