Question
Session Long Project
The Session Long Project consists of an integrative project emphasizing the personalized application of each module’s concepts from the course. For Modules 1-5, students are required to engage in an original integrative project reflecting their comprehensive knowledge of and ability to apply the course materials. Each component of the SLP will be graded on a modular basis.
For the SLP project I want you to pick a company, preferably your own, and, over the course of the next five modules, work to understand the strategy behind it.
So first, pick which company you would like to analyze. If you are in the military it is perfectly acceptable to adapt the questions to the strategies, vision, and missions of your unit. OR you can pick a company that interests you, one that has a lot of information on the web about their practices, and stick with that. Either way, the point of the SLP is for you to take the topic of the module and apply it to your life, be it to your company or a company that particularly interests you.
Your paper is a short 1 to 2 page narrative report. It need not have any detailed research in it (save that for the case).
Begin by identifying the company which you will be studying. Explain how you will get the information you will use and why you picked this company.
Then identify the major mission and vision of the company, the goals and objectives and tell me if it is in line with the needs of the major stakeholders involved, e.g., the customers, the employees and such.
SLP Expectations:
Papers will be evaluated on the basis of breadth and clarity. Did you provide all the information requested in a clear and organized manner? Be sure to include an introduction and conclusion, Document any sources of information you use in the paper with in-text citations or footnotes. Include a refernce list.
For the second part of the SLP project, I want you to look outside the company.
What are the major threats to the company’s ability to serve its stakeholders and make its mission a reality?
What are the major opportunities available to improve the company’s ability to meet the need and make the vision come about?
Write two pages, give or take, on this issue and try to think creatively. I am more interested in you really thinking this through than I am with research and facts. You do not need to disclose any private information. But it should be fun to “play boss” for the moment and analyze what the major external threats and outside opportunities are at play.
SLP EXPECTATIONS:
You paper will be evaluated on how accurately you identify the threats and opportunities facing your company. Critical thinking is essential. Pay attention to how well you organize and support your analysis with evidence. Be sure to document any facts by citing the sources of that information with in-text citations (or footnotes) and a reference list. Papers should include an introduction and conclusion.
For the part 3 of the SLP project we will look inside the company.
What are the two or three biggest strengths the company has that allows it to make the company’s vision come to fruition?
What are its main competitive advantages?
What internal weaknesses can you find?
Write two pages, give or take, explaining these issues in simple terms.
SLP EXPECTATIONS:
You paper will be evaluated on how accurately you identify the strengths and weaknesses evidenced by your company. Critical thinking is essential. Pay attention to how well you organize and support your analysis with evidence. Be sure to document any facts by citing the sources of that information with in-text citations (or footnotes) and a reference list. Papers should include an introduction and conclusion
For the fourth installment of the SLP project we are going to look at the choices made.
What recent strategic choices have been made by the top folks at your organization that help the company to be more competitive?
Can you categorize these choices as following any of Porter’s four generic strategies? Explain.
From the SWOT perspective you have developed in previous modules, how successful has this strategy been at
1. Capitalizing on your organization’s strengths.
2. Shoring up your organization’s weaknesses.
3. Exploiting opportunities in your organization’s environment.
4. Protecting the organization against threats.
Please write a 2 page report answering these questions.
SLP Expectations:
Your paper will be evaluated on how completely you address all of the questions. Be sure to point out both positives and areas that need improvement. As always, document you sources of information with citations (or footnotes).
For the final part of the SLP project I want you to asses the success or failure the company has had from an integrative perspective.
You have identified the major mission, vision and goals, you know the stakeholders, you looked at how well, from a SWOT perspective, what challenges the company faces.
Now I want to know well their strategy works. Following on the last module, where you were asked how well the company deals with internal weakness and internal advantages, in this I want you to tell me how well the company has done in seizing upon external opportunities, and handled outside threats by leveraging its strengths. At the same time, how has its weaknesses exacerbated the threats and cause them to fail to take advantage of opportunities? Has the company’ realized the mission and vision through dealing with exogenous threats and external opportunities?
Again, please write 2 pages and upload it to coursenet at the end of this module.
SLP Expectations:
In this paper, your ability to think critically and provide insightful analysis is key. You do not want to just “rubber stamp” the organization and say they are doing great, but you want to identify specific areas where they fall short as well as where they do very well. Remember to organize you paper for clarity and document any outside resources.
