Week 3-DQ-2 Classmate Response (3-9-18)

Week 3-DQ-2 Classmate Response (3-9-18)

Good Morning Yvette and Dr. Crawford,

This morning I will be discussing some research on counseling specific populations. Included in this post will be an examination of how we can address various population needs without stereotyping.

Before I start writing these posts, I normally read the text about the topic and then head over to the library to do further research. Chapter 4 in Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey (2012) give a wonderful overview of various identity models that could influence career development interventions. Moving over to the library research side, I was blown away with the number of articles that examined very minute sub-populations and their needs for career counseling. Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey (2012) give an overview of interventions for racial, gender, sexual orientation and persons with disabilities groups, but in scanning the articles presented in the library, there were articles on career counseling for veterans, the homeless, those with mental illness, and specific occupational career counseling. In answer to the discussion prompt about agreeing with the statement about believing of counseling techniques and interventions strategies differing based on specific populations, my answer would be a resounding yes.

How can we address different needs without stereotyping? According to Fields (2016) stereotyping is “a widely held, but fixed and over-simplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing” (p. 4). A stereotype is typically thought of as being a negative attribute due to making snap judgements that may not be accurate. I recently witnessed a case where an Asian student in my statistics class said “I am having some problems in this class. Everyone thinks Asians should be good at math – I guess I am the exception”.

As a career counselor, it is crucial that we do not have any types of stereotypes when working with clients. Having worked with thousands of students over my teaching career, I have learned that people come in all shapes, sizes, abilities and ambitions. Because of this, I have learned that teaching is not about me, and how I want to present information, it is actually about the student and how they want to learn. I contrast this with career counseling. It is not a one size fits all approach, I need to listen first to the client to determine the best way to reach them at their level (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2012).

In order to be an effective career counselor with an increasing diversity in the workplace, Clark,  Severy, and Ali Sawyer (2004) suggest that more traditional career advising interventions do not work equally well when dealing with diverse populations. Clark, et al. (2004) suggest that to avoid stereotyping, the career counselor use more narratives in getting the client to describe past career experiences, and visualize a new career based on the clients career objectives.
