· Treaty of Westphalia, Colonialism, Independence; The Germinal Phase
· The Silk Road Into the Middle Ages; Early Waves of Economic Globalization
· Seed of the Global Economy; The Colonial Wave
The Treaty of Westphalia started a wave of global governance for the treaties, leaving the religious powers of authority. “”Religious and political freedoms from empire were established, not for individuals, but for nations” (Chirico, 2014). This was the starting of sovereignty, states were able to govern themselves from religious authorities. At this time colonization started when Europe started to make boundaries on their land to show the domination of power to which land. Americans developed the land of their own creating Independence in the democratic republic that had branches of government based on the Constitution that we still impose today. This separated us from the European nation but alienated the Native Americans with treaties that justified the taking. England negotiated with the Native Americans but always had the upper hand in the negotiation, leaving them landless and resource less. Even though our separation from Europe, it seems that it was about who had power over what land, this is where we are today. Even though the United States became independent, many of the protests were violent while others were not. The colonization created severe inequality tensions, neglected education attainment, religious tensions, again unprepared as Giddens stated for the prosperity of Democratic government.

Hi class,
Waves of globalization are as follows:
1. Waves of Nationhood the Germinal Phase: The Treaty of Westphalia and the Principle of Sovereignty
2. Early Waves of Economic Globalization: The Silk Road into the Middle Ages
3. The Colonial Wave: Planting the Seed of the Global Economy, 1500s to 1860s
The Colonial Wave:
According to the book, the Colonial Wave was extremely influential. Overall, it dealt with “the respect to the economy, the capitalist economy began its global expansion in this era. With respect to culture, the era spread both enlightenment ideals and rational thought” (Chirico, 2014). While societies were restructured, they were also able to create and obtain more resources (i.e. land). As the colonial wave developed, so did the population of people in territories and the land that was used because more in demand. As the Industrial Revolution began, an increase in the trading of resources, like slaves, also became prominent. This way land owners were able to produce more product and gain more money. However, with the growth and lack of land because of it, there was a problem with equality and a halt was put on economic growth. The economy started to become more complex and the “success of former colonies were complex and involved in economics, cultural, and political dynamics, along with population growth and density, international relations, protectionism, international aid, geo-graphic location, access to trade, and human natural resources (Chirico, 2014). During this wave, people and societies were able to gain more independence by becoming land owners, growing and trading more resources, and making more money because of it.

Provide a list of “waves” of globalization from Chapter 3.
Early Waves of Globalization
1. The Silk Road into the Middle Ages
2. Expansion of Mercantile Capitalism
3. The Colonial wave: Planting the Seed of the Global Economy
Then, provide an in-depth description of one of the waves.
The Colonial Wave was a turning point during the colonial period. It is said that “with respect to the economy, the capitalist economy began its global expansion in this era. With respect to culture, the era spread both Enlightenment ideals and rational thought” (Chirico, 2014, p.67). Much of society during this era was rationed with structures that were able to explore and conquer large areas of land and resources. It is explained that the colonial system “influenced economic development and the position of societies in the global economy to this day” (Chirico,2014, p. 68). Settlement became populace during this period, systems of both production as well as labor were established along with the inequality of land. During this time the American colonies achieved political independence and the industrial revolution was commencing which increased the high demand for materials, capital and trade. Trade expanded, and the aspect of slavery become a part of impoverishment and a persistent factor of inequality. Much of the progress of other nations was halted due to the struggle over land and the distribution of assets. It is said that “The elite class did not develop in the agricultural sector with large powerful landowners. It developed in the urban institutional bureaucracy, through seizing political power to tax and control trade in resources” (Chirico, 2014, p.69). The dependence of power from the elite class during this time resulted in violent oppression as well as armed conflict. Colonialism caused a rift with fortune that reflected disestablished prosperity mainly by the colonized European lands. The legacies that were left from this era enriched the lives of the populations that had wealth and concentrated power and protected these institutions through policy rights. This wave showed factors of a unique path, it is said during this time “the success for former colonies were complex and involved economic, cultural, and political dynamics, along with population growth and density, international relations, protectionism, international aid, geo-graphic location, access to trade, and human and natural resources” (Chirico, 2014, p.70) An analysis of the all of this has become a critical point in understanding the beginning process of globalization.

Hello Professor Wilson and Class,
As per my reading in the text, the early waves of economic globalization are:
“The Germinal Phase: The Treaty of Westphalia and the Principle of Sovereignty: The modern state and system of global governance arose from the rubble of these wars. By 1648, most European princes and kings were bankrupt by the expense of war. Many had already signed treaties with one another. They met in the Westphalia region of Germany to broker a peace. As a consequence of the Treaty (or Treaties) of Westphalia, secular political power was stripped from religious authorities. The Treaty of Westphalia gave shape to an association of states, each of which claimed sovereignty within its political boundaries and legitimacy based on the nation within. Sovereignty over a politically defined territory and the citizens within remains the defining characteristic of the modern nation-state (Mann 2003, 137).
The Silk Road Into the Middle Ages: The Silk Road encompassed nearly all the world known to those who traveled it. For close to 2,000 years, from ancient times into the 16th century, it connected Asia, the Middle East, and Europe first by land and later by land and sea. Trade was extensive, extending into Africa as well. Some theorists date globalization to that era. Societies that traded along the Silk Road were not highly interdependent economically, but cultural diffusion was high. In the Middle Ages, trade expanded rapidly, and nations signed treaties of commerce to make trade more secure. Military exploits expanded feudal territories and enriched aristocracies, but the feudal economic system itself did not encourage or require globalization because feudal systems are self-sustaining economically.
The Colonial Wave: Planting the Seed of the Global Economy, 1500s to 1860s: The legacy of colonial systems has been long lived, influencing economic development and the position of societies in the global economy to this day. European immigrants with varying motivations rushed to populate and settle the colonies in the Americas, some to escape their nation and some in the name of it. The sparse population, richness of resources, and clemency of weather made these lands amenable as settler colonies” (Chirico, 2014).
