Case Assignment

Newton, Bower, and Williams (2004) outline the process of “devising and revising” a research question, be it descriptive, relational, or comparative. After reading their paper, write a three-page paper that addresses the following:

1. How do descriptive research questions differ from questions of relationship? From questions of comparison?

2. How should a researcher determine if prior research exists on the intended research topic?

3. What factors should be used to gauge the quality of previous research? Why are these important in making this assessment?

4. Should formulation of a research question precede or follow consultation with the scholarly literature? Please explain.

Length: 3 pages typed, double-spaced.

Use of scholarly sources: You are expected to utilize scholarly sources in preparing your paper and incorporate relevant background readings. Online sources must be limited to credible professional and scholarly publications such as peer-reviewed journal articles, e-books, or specific webpages on websites from a university, government, or nonprofit organization.

Use of your own words: Your paper should be written in your own words to enable faculty to assess your level of understanding. Use of direct quotes should be avoided. Only use direct quotes when preserving the exact words of an author is necessary. In the rare instance that directly quoted material is used, it must be properly cited (with quotation marks and page numbers in the in-text citation); quotes should not exceed 5% of the total paper content.

In-text citations and reference list: Cite your references in the text of all papers and on the reference list. In-text citations and reference list should conform to APA guidelines.

Error-free submissions: Proofread your paper to ensure it is free of errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling, and that each part of the assignment has been addressed clearly and completely.

Similarity Index (SI) score: Papers with Turniitin SI score of 15% or higher (excluding direct quotes and references) will be reviewed by the instructor to distinguish between correctly documented research and possible academic dishonesty. Please use the report and your SI score as a guide to improve the originality of your work.

File format: Your work should be prepared using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Excel depending upon the assignment instructions. For assignments requiring video or voice recordings, use media formats that are supported by MyTLC Courses as noted in our Trident support page on  File Formats .

File Name requirements: The maximum filename length accepted when uploading assignments to your Dropbox is 26 characters.

What is the acceptable limit for file size when uploading files?

Maximum file size for our Trident TLC Dropbox is 1 Gigabyte (GB).

How do I determine file sizes? (MB=megabytes or gigabytes)?

Determine file size by right clicking on your file –> select “Properties.” There is a time limit to upload files as part of our security. A timeout issue is caused by a slow Internet connection and/or your file is too large. If your file does not upload within maximum time allowed, you will receive a timeout error.

What is the maximum time allowed to complete a file upload?

Your Internet connection must allow a file upload within a 30 minute time period.

Why is my professor unable to open files I submitted?

· File is larger than 1 GB.

· File name is more than 26 characters.

· File name contains one or more special characters: \ / : * ? ” < > | –

· File name does not have an extension in the file name.

· File did not upload within 30 minutes due to Internet connection speed or timeout.

· File is corrupt.

Troubleshooting Tips

· File names cannot end with a ‘.’ character, and cannot contain other special characters.

· Rename the file and remove any/all special characters in the title (such as \ / : * ? ” < > | – ).

· Ensure you have a file extension (.docx or .doc) as part of the file name (Ex: Module01_Case.pptx or Mod01.docx)

· Switch to a different browser (ex: Firefox) to upload the file. Each browsers has different security settings ; affecting how certain functions work.

· Save Microsoft files as 97-2003 instead of Office 16 or Office365, then upload the file to the Dropbox.

· Try Uploading the file at a later time.

· Depending on your Internet connection & type of connection or logging in at a different time may give you a faster Internet connection.

· Try a different location (ex: a library with free Wi-Fi) to upload the assignment file, if you are unable to connect at home / office.

· To reduce file sizes, split your file into parts with half the content in one file and the other half in a second file. Upload Part 1, 2, etc.

· Trident recommends clearly naming each file and add a note to your professor indicating your assignment files are split into parts.
