Wangari Muta Maathai was born in Kenya in 1940, into the Kikuyu ethnic group. She was not born into a privileged family, but her father was employed by a white English farmer, her mother grew food in the traditional Kikuyu fashion, and her family was interested in providing their children with an education. In 2004 Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her environmental activism within Kenya. We will read the entire book for this course.
