Marquise de Merteuil
COLLAPSE

During a conversation with Vicomte de Valmont , Marquise de Merteuil is asked how she became the way that she is. She responded saying that she ”didn”t have a choice,” because she was a woman, and that she had always known that she was born to dominate men and avenge women. Later in the film during a heated argument with Vicomte de Valmont, she responds to his yelling at her by saying that the reason she never got re-married was because she didn”t like being spoken to that way, and asked that he take a less marital tone. I think that she struggles with her place in society, and uses her sexuality to manipulate those that she sees as her oppressor (men.) ”Avenge” is a very strong word, and shows that she clearly feels that women have been wronged by the societal stigmas that exist around women”s sexuality. I think that she feels her only option is to ”dominate” men sexually, since this type of interaction and manipulation can be conducted on the sly and reputation is still very important to her. She is aware of the importance of keeping face, but is also bitter that she has to.

Dangerous Liaisons
COLLAPSE

1.The purpose of the beginning of the film is showing the high class society they lived in.. Both characters, Madam Muerteuil and Valmont, introduced with servants caring to there every need, there regular morning routines. Madam Muertueil and Valmont were considered Aristocrats, which is privileged family members who were kin to royal blood and or a form if government ruled by the elite. Madam Maurteuil was fully aware that your character in their high society, needed to remain noble. She wanted to ruin Comte de Gercourt, who left her for another women. Valmont on the other hand, when he was trying to win the heart of Madam Tourveil, went to give some money to the poor family. When Valmont and his servant Azolan, were leaving the poor side of the country and then Valmont asked ”this seems genuine , helping a family” and his servant telling him how there are many families like that one. Valmont didn”t even know there were many families in there low class society. In their high class society the behavior was to remain in the highest standards. Any scandal against your name you we”re to be considered as outcast.

Was Maquise de Merteuil Rightly Punished?
COLLAPSE

4. Marquise de Merteuil was punished for several things. She slandered the names of all who were involved or victimized by the evil she did. She ruined a perfectly good marriage. She also was responsible for the death of two people. Therefore, her crimes would be of murder and of slander. I feel that her punishment was not fair. Although, it was very appropriate, the people should have done something a little more than just expose her for the horrible person she was. It was not right for her to take out her self loathing and pity on the lives and well-beings of others. Sure, she may have been hurt but, to create such a heinous crime and ruining so many names an lives took things way too far. Although, seeing the shame in her eyes and hearing all of the booing from the crowd was simply refreshing in granting a little justice.
