Econ 410 Presentations
Summer 2015
This is to provide more detail on what I expect from your class presentation. The menu
of topics covers a wide range of financial institutions, securities and practices. The presentations
will gradually fill in a comprehensive picture of the many facets of our financial
system, and provide an opportunity to discuss the economic forces and principles that shape
it. Your talk will give you the opportunity to learn in more detail about at least one part
of that system. Pick something that you think might be interesting.
You should plan a talk of about 20 minutes, which will be followed by 5-10 minutes of
questions and/or discussion by the class. It is desirable that you use either PowerPoint or
overheads to aid your presentation, provide graphs or data if appropriate, and serve as outline
of the important points. Please provide a 2-3 page set of notes that can be emailed or
handed out to the class. Ideally, you should send these to me a couple of days before the talk.
The exams will include the material covered in the presentations, so provide the sort of
notes you yourself would wish to help prepare for exams.
Please let me know your topic by 27 May. Presentation dates will be from 1 June to 20
July. Choice of topics will be on first-come, first-served basis. I will keep and periodically
broadcast the list of topics/dates taken.
As appropriate for your topic, and if information is available, you should:
• Define and describe the instrument or security, and its contractual terms, for the
simplest case. Describe simple variants if applicable.
• Say where and how it is traded. Indicate if possible how common it is (e.g., how much
is outstanding, or what is the trading volume)
• Who are the ultimate ‘end users’ (e.g., hedgers, arbitragers, speculators). What are
their motives? Why is the market there?
• What factors influence or determine equilibrium prices?
• If it has recently been a topic in the financial news or regulatory debate, do mention
it.
• Provide useful references (including websites) for further information or understanding.
Econ 482 Essay
The essay for the course is to be a maximum of 10 pages double-spaced, excluding tables
or graphs that might be at the end. If you need more space, please ask me. It may be on
any topic relevant to this course, including the subject on which you give your presentation.
This is your chance to show that you can write, summarize, select what is important
to include — possibly with analysis that makes it look like you are an almost-graduated
econ major. Make sure to document and reference material of others used. Above all, pick
something that would be fun for you to examine more closely.
