Health information technology has tremendously changed healthcare delivery. One of its
biggest tools is electronic health records. Patients and providers are able to access health
information remotely. Health information technology has made healthcare safer. This is
achieved by enhancing clinical delivery systems performance, improving patient quality care,
and strengthening and promoting patient-centered care. According to the article, “Population
Health and Technology: Placing People First”, health information technology is not only
changing healthcare delivery, but it’s also changing public health and health education. New
York Health Department has difficulty serving its population. This is exactly what is needed at
New York Public Health Department.
The article defines population health as a group of people health outcomes, including the
delivery of the health outcomes inside the group. Health information technology provides
prospects to improve population’s health that’s defined by conditions, geography, or health
needs. However, for technology to be successful in public health an acceptance and
understanding that consumers are first and second technology must be implemented. People are
the most important factor in the entire process of health information technology and they must be

educated. It is known that people are important to New York Public Health Department and
educating the people on diseases and illnesses prevention is a main goal.
Health information technology is being utilized for health education. The United States
are known for being a melting pot. This mean the county has a very large diverse population.
The article states that ethnic and racial minorities have been estimated to be nearly 40% of the
United States population by 2050. New York Public Health Department service many people of
different backgrounds. The entire population needs to be educated on health to prevent diseases
and other illnesses. Health information technology is an economical way to achieve this goal.
In conclusion, this article was a good source of information about the future of health
information technology. Electronic medical records are transforming the way healthcare is being
delivered in both the industry and population. Nevertheless, the focus is still on the people not
the technology. Many seem to be satisfied with the system. The New York Health Department
will greatly benefit from health information technology. It will help the company achieve many
of its goals and improve public health.
