The health care field consists of a broad range of organizations; each of these organizations fulfills a vital role in advancing health and delivering health care goods and services.
Take a few minutes to think about some of these organizations and how they achieve their specific objectives. For instance, what is the main goal of a nonprofit organization focused on a specific aspect of public health? How does it achieve its goal?What are the objectives of the research division of a pharmaceutical company? How do the services provided by a small physician practice compare with those provided at a community clinic?
Now think about the definitions provided in this week’s Learning Resources. To what extent are various health-related and health care–related goods and services private versus public? Why is it important for you—given your current or future professional role—to understand this distinction and how various goods and services are delivered in health care?
