Group Project & Presentation (Component A) Briefing Sheet
Component A, the group presentation, is a major part of the assessment for this module, consisting 40% of your final module mark. It consists of (1) PowerPoint presentation submitted on-line and (2) a formal oral presentation during the January assessment period. As noted in the module handbook your team is required to:
Deliver a formal group presentation lasting up to 20 minutes at an assigned time as scheduled during the Assessment Period. A further 5-10 minutes will be allowed for you to answer questions put to you by your tutor/ examiner and peers. Students should check with their tutor for dates and times once the exam schedule is provided. The Examinations Team at UWE will arrange for all UOP presentations to be held so they do not conflict with any other exams that you or your teammates may have. All members of the team must be present and must take an active role in the presentation. The presentation is essentially the exam for this module and hence any member who fail to attend the presentation for any reason will fail this assessment component and would be required to do a resit work in July Resit Assessment Period.
The group project and presentation requires significant thinking, planning, research and organising; therefore a lot of time has to be allotted to its preparation. The exact amount of time spent on projects is not fixed, but is on the order of 25-35 days full time equivalent of team effort – this is because the project is a major part of a 15-credits module (which suggests that the hours allocated to the module is 150 hours for lectures, tutorials and self-study for assessment preparation).
PROJECT TOPIC
Groups consisting of 4-5 students will be exploring a specific management topic of their choice, and critically analyse and evaluate the practices of real organisations drawing on the mainstream and critical literature around the topic.
The choice of topic is yours but must be an extension of the learning achieved from at least 2 study units covered in the following lectures and tutorials on UOP: Fun at work; Groups and Teams; Technology; Leadership; Individual differences.
After having selected a topic to study you need to collect primary data from the organisation and/or members of organisations(s) (interviews, surveys etc.) and/ or secondary data from published sources (trade and industry magazines and reports, books, internet etc.) to analyse and interpret your findings in light of theories discussed in lectures.
TEAM ALLOCATION
The tutorial groups you are assigned to will be subdivided into smaller groups for the projects. During the semester you will be asked to form own teams of 4-5 members and notify the tutor by the end of the session. Any student who has not notified the tutor beyond the allocated point will randomly be allocated into a team.
PROJECT PRESENTATION
This project is also an opportunity to practice your presentation skills. Thus, all projects should be presented in-class in a 20-minutes long presentation using appropriate media such as PowerPoint, video etc. The quality of the presentation will be marked as well (please refer the Presentation Marking Criteria). As noted above, all team members must be present and must take an active role in the presentation by presenting at least one aspect of the project.
Since this is a formal piece of assessment, as in any other university assessment, effective scholarship has to be evidenced. This means that you must use citations/references in the body and at the end of the presentation. Plagiarism will be penalised as usual.
TEAM GRADE
Successful completion of the group project and presentation will require contributions from all team members and not just one or two individuals. Individuals are therefore expected to contribute equally to the team in terms of their effort. Rewards are shared equally, except in instances where a member’s teammates judge his or her efforts to be deficient.
DEALING WITH UNDERPERFORMANCE AND TEAM CONFLICTS
It is the team’s responsibility to work with its members to assure that everyone is contributing adequately and to resolve conflicts. For the team to function as smooth as possible you are strongly encouraged to draft a Team Contract. Two samples are provided on Blackboard.
As in real organisations individuals may not perform satisfactorily or may not fit with the “culture” or values of the other team members. In such cases individuals may be fired from the team. This action is drastic, but occasionally necessary. Upon written petition of ALL other team members, the tutor may authorise a team to “fire” an individual. Your team must demonstrate in its written petition the proactive steps the team has taken to address the problem and explain why firing is the only remaining viable option.
Individuals that have been fired from a team will have the opportunity to solicit a new position from another team. It is left to the discretion of other teams whether they wish to hire that individual or not. No other team will be obligated to hire a fired individual. If another team does not hire the individual, the individual will be required to submit his or her own version of the PowerPoint presentation and be required to make an individual presentation. Given the complexity and intensity of this project, an individual effort in this regard will be extremely challenging!
