BIOLOGY 101 – What is the specific relationship

Question
biology

Exercise 1, part 1.

What is the specific relationship, if any? So, we are looking at a height to weight relationship and we will test it.

Hypothesis: Height in centimeters (cm) divided by weight in kilograms (kg) equals 4cm/kg.

Centimeters represented by cm and kilograms represented by kg are metric units to be used for this exercise. One inch is equal to 2.54 cm and 2.2 pounds is equal to one kg. You will need to convert your measurements from English units to metric units for this exercise.

Test the hypothesis by obtaining the height and weight of 15 people and record your data in the table below. A sample subject has been done for you.

Subject name Height in cm Weight in kg Height to weight ratio in cm/kg

Expected Observed

Bill 183 cm 77 kg 4cm/kg 2.37cm/kg

1.Monica 137 cm 35 kg 4cm/kg 3.91cm/kg

2.Enock 145 cm 44 kg 4cm/kg 3.29cm/kg

3.Ketsia 150 cm 47 kg 4cm/kg 3.19cm/kg

4.Jm 160 cm 57 kg 4cm/kg 2.80cm/kg

5.Bob 152 cm 50 kg 4cm/kg 3.04cm/kg

6.Jimmy 170 cm 67 kg 4cm/kg 2.53cm/kg

7.Jt 163 cm 60 kg 4cm/kg 2.71cm/kg

8.Prisca 155 cm 52 kg 4cm/kg 2.98cm/kg

9.Naomi 173 cm 69 kg 4cm/kg 2.50cm/kg

10.Marielle 180 cm 77 kg 4cm/kg 2.33cm/kg

11.Tite 153 cm 50 kg 4cm/kg 3.06cm/kg

12.Tim 175 cm 79 kg 4cm/kg 2.21cm/kg

13.Dido 140 cm 45 kg 4cm/kg 3.11cm/kg

14.Mike 142 cm 41 kg 4cm/kg 3.46cm/kg

15.Sammy 157 cm 53 kg 4cm/kg 2.96cm/kg

Questions to respond to based on the data collected in exercise 1, part 1.

1. Is height in centimeters four times weight in kilograms? Explain your answer with supporting data.

2. What is the average relationship between height in cm and weight in kg for your sample group? Add all 15 sample ratios and divide by 15.

3. How could you revise your hypothesis and then retest to get a better idea of the height to weight relationship

4. Should you separate females from males and test your original hypothesis with 15 subjects of each sex? Explain your decision.

Exercise 1, part 2.

So, we are looking at an arm length to body height relationship and we will test it. Let’s test this observation by constructing a hypothesis. Measure arm length from the edge of the shoulder to the tip of the fingers.

Hypothesis: The length of a person’s arm in centimeters is equal to 0.4 of her or his height in centimeters.

Remember one inch is equal to 2.54cm. You will need to convert you measurements to metric units for this exercise.

Test the hypothesis by measuring the arm length and body height of 15 people and record your data in the table below. A sample subject has been done for you.

Subject Arm length, cm Body height, cm Length to height ratio, cm/cm

name Expected Observed

Bill 66 cm 160 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.4cm/cm

1.Jame 45 cm 149 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.3cm/cm

2.Fatou 47 cm 152 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.3cm/cm

3.Luke 48 cm 155 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.3cm/cm

4.Tom 53 cm 157 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.4cm/cm

5.Ken 42 cm 148 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.3cm/cm

6.Eddy 52 cm 164 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.3cm/cm

7.Keke 54 cm 168 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.3cm/cm

8.Keren 61 cm 170 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.4cm/cm

9.Steve 65 cm 180 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.4cm/cm

10.Sony 67 cm 183 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.4cm/cm

11.Dj 59 cm 177 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.4cm/cm

12.Tim 46 cm 150 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.3cm/cm

13.Tite 58 cm 175 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.4cm/cm

14.Jay 50 cm 159 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.3cm/cm

15.Hug 56 cm 172 cm 0.4cm/cm 0.3cm/cm

Questions to respond to based on the data collected in exercise 1, part 2.

1. According to the results, what is the relationship between height and arm length?

2. Do you accept the hypothesis that you have tested? Yes or no

3. At this point in the scientific method what would be your next steps

4. Should you separate females from males and test your original hypothesis with 15 subjects of each sex? Explain your decision.

Exercise 1, part 3.

So, we are looking at a warm hand to cold hand relationship and we will test it. Let’s test this observation by constructing a hypothesis.

Hypothesis: People with warms hands have been doing some sort of activity involving their hands and people with colder hands have not been doing some sort of activity involving their hands.

Test the hypothesis by measuring the hand temperature of 15 people at random by feeling their hands and determining relative temperature, warm or cold and record your data in the table below. A sample subject has been done for you.

Subject Active Inactive Warm or cold hands

name Expected Observed

Bill Yes No Warm Warm

1.Francine Yes No Warm Warm

2.Naomi Yes No Warm Warm

3.Pascal Yes No Warm Warm

4.Denis Yes No Warm Warm

5.Henry Yes No Warm Warm

Questions to respond to based on the data collected in exercise 1, part 3.

1. According to your results what is the relationship between cold versus warm hands?

2. Do you accept this hypothesis? Yes or no

3. Should you separate females from males and test your original hypothesis with 15 subjects of each sex? Explain your decision.

4. How could you revise your hypothesis and then retest to get a better idea of the cold hand to warm hand relationship?
