In the case of Eboni and her family, we can learn the impact of adultism which young people. Adultism is described as, adults or other authority figures, who oppress the young (Adams et al., 2013). Young people are expected to follow, the rules and regulations that are made by family, schools and other authoritative figures, but many of these circumstances lead young people being oppressed (Adams et al., 2013).
Eboni presents as an African-American teen, college bound, and pregnant which is unplanned (Plummer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014). While watching the video of Eboni and her friend’s interaction, we learn that Eboni confided in the school social worker. Where she revealed her pregnancy, felt “attacked” for becoming pregnant and jumping to conclusions before getting all of the information, the encounter had a lack of empathy (Laureate Education, 2013). Eboni’s mother, on the other hand, doesn’t want Eboni to make the same mistakes that she did, when she was Eboni’s age, furthermore, she does not want Eboni to become another statistic, her mother is pushing for her to have an abortion (Laureate Education, 2013). Eboni’s father is a religious man and has his opinion about the pregnancy and what Eboni needs to do (Plummer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014). All of the adults in Eboni’s life have, told her what the what her to do, but all of this information is overwhelming, and making her even more unsure of what to do. Furthermore, none for the adults in Eboni’s life and consulted with her, asking what she wants to do.
Eboni does not want to disappoint either of her parents, as she looks up to them. But is also does not want to make a decision, that she is going to regret for the rest of her life either. Regarding oppression, the exposure, and experience that people have while they are young will impact the rest of their lives and interactions than have with others (Adams et al., 2013). Eboni is going to have to make some hard decision and at the end of the day, not everyone in her family is going to be happy with the decision she makes. Regarding class and privilege, when Eboni was born she was a statistic being born to an unwed teenage mom. Eboni wants to rise above this and break the cycle.
