1) One day, Olivia, a 74 year-old woman who has had diabetes for many years, iseating breakfast when she suddenly sees a black spot floating in front of her. After blinking and rubbing her eyes, she notices that the spot drifts to follow her line of sight, and that it’s only visible with her left eye. She sits for several minutes observing the spot. If she keeps her eye still, the spot driftsvery slowly. If she moves her eye, the spot swirls around, elongating into a dark dancing snake. Olivia goes back to bed for a while, but can’t sleep. After half an hour, the spot/snake has dissipated into a dark brownish fog across everything she sees with her left eye. She calls her eye doctor, and is told to come right in.
The ophthalmologist tells Olivia she has a vitreous hemorrhage caused by diabetic retinopathy, and uses a laser to seal the source of the bleeding. Over the next several months, Olivia has several more laser treatments on both eyes to prevent further bleeding.
