Overview: Program Evaluation 1 is a two part assignment that is to be completed in groups. In part one, groups will assume the role of public health officials and work to develop an assessment tool to evaluate summer camp programs for diabetic children. In part two, the group will then use the assessment tool they have designed to evaluate a specific camp website, assigned by the instructor. Additionally for part two, the group will create a PowerPoint presentation suitable to present to the designers of the camp program that highlights program effectiveness and provides recommendations to improve program weaknesses.
Part One – The Assessment Tool, the instructor will divide the class into groups. In, group members will begin working together as a team to develop an assessment tool to evaluate summer camp programs dedicated to meeting the needs of diabetic children and their families. Summer camps are a practical way to help diabetic children feel normal and better learn to cope with their disease. However, some camps are better equipped to meet the needs of a diabetic child than others.
The group must identify not only the medical needs of a diabetic child, but the complete physical, psychological, intellectual, social, and spiritual needs of the child as they develop their assessment tool. The assessment tool should be equipped to measure whether or not the camp program is adequately meeting the identified needs of the diabetic child. The group should also identify co-morbidities of diabetes mellitus and the assessment tool should be able to measure if the camp addresses these co-morbidities. As the assessment tool is created, it is important to remember that children may suffer from either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Remember also that children targeted by camp programs may come from a variety of cultural, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds; therefore, the program must have an appropriate level of sensitivity to diversity and the assessment tool should measure this.
In developing the assessment tool, it may first be useful to determine what the needs of a diabetic child might be from what you have learned about diabetes in your readings or from outside sources (consider the CDC informational page concerning diabetes at school at http://www.cdc.gov/Features/DiabetesInSchool/). It may also be helpful to first identify what the co-morbidities of diabetes are as well as issues related to sensitivity to diversity. Then, determine what a short summer camp experience might be able to address practically in a short period of time. Finally, design criteria to measure how well a camp program meets the needs of a diabetic child, addresses co-morbidities, and the camp programs’ level of sensitivity to diversity. These criteria will form the foundation of your assessment tool. As you design your assessment tool, keep in mind that the tool should be designed to be completed by a public health professional. Alternatively, you may include a means to assess the camp on multiple levels such as via the campers, parents, and public health professional. Regardless of which direction you take your assessment tool(s), ensure there is a component that allows the public health professional to conduct an assessment of the camp. You will assume the role of a public health professional in Part 2 of this assignment, conducting an assessment of the camp website you are assigned to.
You are encouraged to review the grading rubric and instructions for Part 2 of this assignment prior to finalizing your work for Part 1. Part Two – The PowerPoint Presentation: After the assessment tool has been designed, the instructor will assign each group to a camp website, dedicated to helping diabetic children. During Module/Week 4, the group will use their assessment tool to evaluate the website and determine the effectiveness of the camp program in meeting diabetic children’s needs, educating diabetic children on co-morbidities, and addressing issues of diversity. The collected data will then be organized into a PowerPoint presentation suitable for presentation to the designers of the camp program to highlight program effectiveness and provide recommendations to improve program weaknesses.
