In assignments 1 and 2, you traced the scientific method through a primary scientific article by reading. The next step is to analyze or critique the article. Critiquing research can be considered an appraisal of the strength and limitations of the research study. Assessing the authenticity of the research findings, by careful critical analysis serves to broaden the understanding of the subject matter, and provide a background for conducting further study. This assignment is designed to help you learn or improve the skill of critiquing primary scientific articles. In this assignment, you will critique the abstract, introduction, materials, methods, results, discussion and conclusion sections of the article designated as primary article A.
Things to consider before you critically analyze a primary scientific article:
1. Be sure you have thoroughly read the article 2. As you compose the critique, refrain from using personal pronouns, making sure to distinguish your thoughts from the author’s words 3. Throughout the critique, be sure to distinguish facts from opinions, and distinguish objectivity from bias 4. Make inferences from the facts 5. Focus on the positive aspects and what the author(s) of the study learned
To review or familiarize yourself with critiquing a primary scientific article, please read the article, “Critiquing Research Articles” which can be found under Course Content for Week 4.
THE ASSIGNMENT
After reading the assigned article on critiquing research articles found in the LEO classroom, please address each of the following items. Label each section of your paper according to the labels A-I below.
A. Summary Begin your critical analysis with a brief summary of the article (4-6 sentences). (5 points) B. Observation, Question, and Hypothesis (6 points) Identify and challenge starting assumptions based on the author’s observations, questions, and hypothesis
C. The Abstract (6 points) Explain why the abstract did or did not explain the purpose of the paper
D. The Introduction (12 points) 1. Explain whether or not the references and background information support the grounds for the research (6) 2. Seek out and identify key pieces of background information that is lacking (6) E. The Materials and Methods (8 points) 1. Explain why the research methods and subjects were or were not appropriate for the research question (4) 2. Identify and explain the strengths and weaknesses of the experimental design (4) F. The Results (8 points) 1. Explain why the graphs and tables did or did not clarify the data analysis (4) 2. Explain why the results were or were not relevant to the research question (4) G. The Discussion (12 points) 1. Explain whether the results were or were not interpreted in relation to the research question (6) 2. Explain the relevance of the results to the overall research discipline (6) H. The Conclusion (8 points) 1. Explain what fresh insights or new perspectives on the topic were demonstrated by the research (4) 2. Identify and explain the limitations of the research (4)
