Using a life table to predict the population size in future years
You survey a population during a single week at the end of the breeding season and find 180 newborns,
70 1-year olds, 30 2-year olds and 10 3-year olds (this is the current year, Y1). Mortality occurs during
the winter before the next breeding season. The maximum life span is three years, so there are no fouryear olds.
• Draw a life table and calculate survival rates and survivorship. Closely look at the calculations
presented in Table 10.1 in your textbook if you have trouble – your table is basically the same with
different starting data. I’ve given you an empty table below but you can also do it in Excel or another
program.
Age x Survival rate Sx Survivorship lx Fecundity Fx • Your fieldwork in past years has documented that the fecundity of newborns = 0, 1-year olds = 1, 2year olds = 2, and 3-year olds = 0.5. Using these fecundity data, calculate how many individuals are
expected to be in each age group in the next time period, Y2 (Year 2, after the next breeding season).
Important: Use the survival rate you calculated above and follow the steps outlined in Table 10.4.
Repeat this for three more years (Y3, Y4, Y5). • What is the total population size in each of these years? What is lambda for these years? Is lambda
constant? Do you expect it to be constant at some point? Compare this to the growth of the
hypothetical population described in Figure 10.8 (A) and (B). • Submit both tables and your answers to the questions above as a file on Moodle.
