- I chose option 2. I chose to look up a random area. The area seems a bit suburban. The buildings seem farm like. The buildings may not be buildings at all just a few houses. The houses seem to be single family houses instead of apartments. Some houses in sight are one story others are two stories. The yards are a bit small and there is much room in between the houses. Around the houses there are follows beds in front and by driveways. The cars seen in view aren’t the newest model cars. From how the yards and houses look its seems to be a working class area. There days may consist of work and outside work. The area I chose was in East Falmouth Ma. Researching the area I found it consists of Island and beaches. - For this week’s discussion, I chose to write about option 1: What We Learn From 50 Years of Kids Drawing Scientists and Understanding Why Girls Underperform at Science. When I picture a scientist, I picture them looking like Bill Nye the science guy. When I was a child, I pictured a scientist having squiggly hair on top of their head as if they had been shocked, safety glasses on, and a long white coat with black buttons. I don’t know why but I have always had that view in my head of how they looked. - A lot of children base their career off what they see on television, computers, and in the real world. We see people as kids and say I want to be a computer scientist just like him, or I want to be an Artist just like her. Kids see gender and think that only that specific gender can do that job. They see mostly men being firefighters, so the little boys are wanting to be a firefighter. They see mostly women being teachers and nurses so that’s what little girls base their career on, and we see this happen all the time. Children see what their mothers and fathers do and think only a man can do the job their fathers do and only a woman can do the job mothers do. In books and on television they don’t show women doctors or male nurses which is why children go for what they see. We can help children overcome stereotype by explaining to them that no matter their gender you can be whatever you want to be. We can also talk more about stereotype in classrooms so that children can get more comfortable with becoming and learning to live with who they want to be. We must explain to kids that just because the color is pink does not mean it’s a girl color, and blue isn’t just for boys and these colors should be looked as neutral colors.
