Question
When our body systems function at normal levels, keeping our temperature steady at 98.6° Fahrenheit,
no fluid retention, and no imbalances with nutrients in the blood, we achieve homeostasis (Rizzo, 2010,
p.13).

Homeostasis is vital to maintaining a healthy body, and the numerous systems at work to pump our
blood, distribute nutrients, and regulate fluid levels require some upkeep by way of hydration, nutrition,
exercise, and adequate rest. In hospitals, newborn babies are monitored for their first few days of life to
make sure they are able to achieve and maintain homeostasis. A pediatrician will do follow-ups every
few weeks afterward to monitor this as well. We are also monitored as we age to make sure our bones
stay healthy, we eat enough food, and are active enough to keep our bodies functioning properly.
Positive and Negative Feedback
Homeostasis is based on positive and negative feedback loops. Watch this video to gain an

have a good idea of positive and negative feedback loops in general and how homeostasis works within
the female body during ovulation and the estrogen cycle in specific.

Examples
One example of homeostasis comes with the regulation of blood levels, particularly with regard to the
presence of things like oxygen, calcium, and sugars. You may have heard of one symptom that can
happen when a person’s iron levels are off in their blood; it’s commonly referred to as anemia (Links to

Another example of homeostasis comes with regulation of calcium levels in the blood. Hypocalcaemia
happens when a person does not have enough calcium in their blood to nourish the body, particularly
the bones. Many people who are lacking in calcium will often take a supplement to solve the issue,
adding the extra calcium into their diet regimen. Hypercalcaemia is when there is too much calcium in
the blood.
