13 Jun EAS 131 – FINAL PROJECT THE PERFECT STORM
Question
INTRODUCTION TO METROLOGY – EAS 131
THE PERFECT STORM
This final project will be an opportunity to demonstrate and use what you have learned in this course. You will take an in-depth look at a discussion and analysis of a single notable weather instance that impacted a huge area of the eastern United States and Atlantic Ocean. See detail below.
Perfect Storm Analysis
Your final written project will be a personal research of the Perfect Storm of October 1991, referred to as the unnamed hurricane of 1991 and the “Halloween Nor’easter.”
The written project should be10 pages long, not including references, images and graphs. The project is to be your own work and, as with all written submissions, will be submitted to the university’s automated plagiarism analysis computer tools.
In this project you will use and cite credible sources, such as NOAA and NHC information, as well as other published meteorological sources, to write your historical analysis of the development of the storm starting with the development of Hurricane Grace on October 27, 1991.
Bring into your report images and charts and point out key features and your interpretation of the meaning. Use specific examples to show your competent understanding of the use of the information.
Ride on the shoulders of published information but do not plagiarize.
Resources are in the public domain that include:
Radar imagery
Visual imagery
Satellite imagery
Pressure charts and frontal charts
Forecasts
Tie into the analysis specific information you have learned from the course. Talk in terms of mechanisms and forces that we have studied. Why did Grace form? What were pressures like in the Northeast, and so on. Use correct meteorological language in your write-up. The interest is not in the single technical terms that you use, per se, but that you can relate the course material to the storm event information that you find.
Comment on areas that you ‘THINK’ might be related to something you studied and learned. Feel free to propose reasons why something may have occurred based on what you now know.
The objective is to make the report YOURS so identify areas of further personal interest and areas in which you are putting together practical observations with things you have learned for the first time in a focused manner.
Don’t get caught up in the Hollywood drama related to the movie! This is a serious report about a serious meteorological event. You might comment about how Hollywood was wrong. For instance, Hurricane Grace was NOT a Category 5 at any time in its life!
