BIO 450 1606 – What is the common and scientific name for the species

Question
Natural History of California
BIO 450 1606
Section I. Species ID and Discussion
1) What is the common and scientific name for the species in the photo shown below?
Where do you find it in TPNR? What ecological role might it play in the health of the
TPNR ecosystem? What does the presence of native species like this tell you about the
relative amount of nutrients and resources circulating in the chapparal?

2) Name a California-native insect and vertebrate animal species you found in TPNR and
include a photo of it. Describe the conditions in which you found this species. Describe
the species morphology and appearance. Describe the ecological niche you feel this
species occupies in the health of the MTRP ecosystem. What traits or characters from
this species did you utilize in concluding what you did about its ecological niche?
Finally, how did you definitely ID this species (with references!)?

3) Below is a picture of N. America’s most rare tree, the Torrey Pine (Pinus torreyana)
from within this park. Consider all aspects of this place. Climate, soils, tsunami or flood
risk, soil erosion, etc. Using your experience in natural history study, why do you think
the Torrey Pine is so rare? You might want to investigate the tree a bit, relative to other
pines, before answering.

Section II.
In class we’ve discussed how unique ecoregion or biome-derived factors will
dictate the biodiversity that inhabit that region. Each ecoregion also harbors unique
stresses with it, including impact of human activity. A great example of this can be found
by comparing the plants and animals that live in Moist Evergreen Forests and Chaparral.
For this assignment, you need to observe 10 different organisms (bluffs or beach and
intertidal). Make two journal posts, one for intertidal and one for the ecoregion you feel is
represented by the top of the cliffs. Remember to attach the respective observations and
explain in the posts how you suspect each and every species you observed might be
adapted to their environment (wet environments, salt tolerance, etc.).

I’ll leave it up to you to find examples of such ecoregions in the park to visit.
We’re visiting one confined region of TPNR, but such ecoregions can be found in many
areas throughout the park. +1.25 EC to any student’s iNaturalist.org report in which a
species name is not reported by anyone else in the class, for each species.

Section III.
In challenging conditions species often form relationships with one another to
leverage their mutual fitness. Sometimes these relationships aid both participants.
Sometimes one is helped while another suffers. Find 2 observations of more than one
species interacting with other species. For example, you might observe a spider catching
fly, lichen, a bee pollinating a plant, a crawfish eating something, or a tick parasitizing a
lizard. For each observation use ‘What did you see’ field (on iNaturalist.org) to enter one
of the species (e.g. Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger) for the squirrel) and the ‘Associated
Species’ additional field to identify the other species (e.g. the ‘Oaks (Genus Quercus)’ for

the acorn). In the ‘Description’ field describe the interaction you observed. Put both
observations in a journal post labeled ‘Species Interactions-FT2-TPNR_LastName’.

Section IV.
Since there are so many, despite the well-intentioned “Natural Reserve” status of
this place, please discuss any 8 observations of the impact (on ecology, natural resource
stability, biodiversity, etc.) of the large human presence and proximity to the site we
visited today. Consider the fact that Torrey Pines Rd crossing this estuary inlet at the
beach itself is a dramatic change to sea life that may have utilized the efflux of nutrients
from the freshwater drainage. Briefly describe the role each observation had on
‘conservation’ of the site.
