Option 1: Share an example from your personal experience (of your own or of someone you know), or an example from history, where groupthink may have influenced people to behave or arrive at a decision in a way that many individual members privately might have avoided or thought unwise.
Option 2: Choose a form of deviance with which you are familiar (not necessarily something you have done, but something someone you know did). Examine why society views that behavior as deviant and whether perceptions of that behavior have changed over time. Determine and explain which theory of deviance you think works best for understanding the deviant behavior you have chosen to discuss. Remember to be respectful considering potentially sensitive topics and consider what you might be disclosing as there is no guarantee of privacy.
I am going to pick option 1 because I have a personal experience that have influence people and me to behave or arrive at a decision in a way that many individual members privately might have avoided or thought unwise. The personal experience was when I was coming home from library. It was a hot Saturday afternoon when I just finished from Library and was feeling very hungry, so I decided to go and get something to eat at the local store when I was going home. I only ate tea and bread for breakfast, and I was super hungry, so I went to the local store to get something to eat. When I entered the store close to my home, I walked down the aisle to the grocery to pick a few things that was needed in the house. A lot of people were in the store picking the thing they need in their house. I decided to pick potato chips and a bottle of coke, when I noticed a middle-aged man probably a homeless man, who walked into the grocery store unnoticed by others. There was just something about him that got my attention that very day. I noticed he was walking around the store very scared. He later picked up some cigarette, some drink and small cookies and tucked it under his shirt in a flashed of seconds then he looked towards my direction and saw me looking at him. At first, my gut at first was to alert the store authorities and let them know what had just happened, but later decided to walk up to him and let him know I saw what he did and maybe advise him to put the things he stole back on the shelf and possibly offer him a helping hand; then I remembered I had just have $5 on me, enough to get me the exact amount of things I had intended on buying from the store. I walked up to him and told him the exact thing I had planned to let him know I had seen what he had done and that it was not the right thing to do and it will be nice for him to put what he stole back. It was then he told me his story about how he ended to become a homeless man. One of the stories was touching and put me deeper into my dilemma. He used to be an advertising executive with one of the big advertising firms in the country. He had everything going well for him and then suddenly he lost his job for something he described as “a small mistake”. He started finding it extremely difficult to cater for his needs and that of his family. He told me he had 3 children and that it was the birthday of his last child who was his favorite and he had nothing on him, but he had promised her that he would get her a gift some months back. He admitted that this was his first time of doing such and that he didn’t intend to do it again. I felt so much pity for him. I imagine myself in his shoe. I was left with two options-I could either walk up to the security guys at the entrance of the store and tell them what I had witnessed or pay for what the man stole with the little I had on me. The second option would mean I remained hungry till I got home. Eventually I decided to pay for what he had taken and asked him never to steal again. I walked back to the house thinking and trying to justify my action by saying to myself I had done the right thing. If faced with the same problem today, I think I would still do the same. It just is not right to overlook such things. What the man did was wrong but then; he had a reason for doing what he did. My helping does not make what he did right, as different people will react differently to the same situation. However, it made me feel like I had touched a life in need. This my experience influenced me a lot and when I tell my family and friends about it, first they did not believe me, but thank God I took a picture with the man that will show proved I did. Whenever any of my family or friends see a homeless person the give them money whether the homeless person is faking to be homeless, God has blessed you for your kindness. The lesson here is to give and get your reward by God. According to Kendell, “Groupthink is the process by which members of a cohesive group arrive at a decision that many individual members privately believe is unwise” (Kendell, 2018, pg. 137). According to Macinois, “groupthink is the tendency of group memebers to conform, resulting in a narrow view of some issue” ( Macinois, 2019, pg. 144).
