Revision for Final Exam
Please read this document carefully, and scroll down to the end of the document.
Please pay attention to the basic directions I am writing in this message. The revision you are writing for your final examination is not a patch job. You may use some of your original ideas, but you need to reread the primary source and take notes so you are in fact revising your essay. You are to redo and start from scratch. This is an out of class assignment; therefore, the product you produce should reflect the time and work you put into the rewrite of this essay.
Previous modules address the different types of introductions (Remember to combine two types.), documentation, and conclusion methods.
You need to have a Works Cited page, following MLA format. This is, of course, is in one of the modules. Otherwise, just Google MLA Works Cited page. Everyone should have at least one entry, the textbook entry. In addition, I strongly suggest that you look for resources to integrate new information into your revised essay. You can use the research material in your introduction and/or the body of your essay. There are critical essays you can find by using GALIEO, our library system, or Google Scholar. The research only works if you do not wait until the last minute.
Sentence Outlines
In contrast to a topic outline, a sentence outline goes into the little details of the paper and can therefore be useful for more complex topics or providing more detailed structures. The advantage of this type of outline is seeing exactly what a paper will be about, rather than just relying on key words to spark ideas. Sentence outlines generally contain sentences describing what each section will cover. All headings and sub-headings must be in sentence form. In addition, this type of outline can also contain the quotations and/or subsequent analysis. This tactic can help by ensuring the paper has enough support for main ideas as well as reminding the writer to actually analyze and discuss quotations. Some people also find it easier to move from a micro outline to the paper since there is already so much detail and support, and they can simply continue to expand on the ideas with further analysis. Do not put your introduction or conclusion in the outline.
RULES OF OUTLINING
Identify at least four points in support of your thesis.
Use Roman Numerals for main points–Roman numerals do not represent paragraphs. Roman numerals represent major ideas that support/prove the thesis, not paragraphs. A major point can have multiple paragraphs to prove that point, not one paragraph. Stop thinking in terms of paragraphs. Always think in terms of all the evidence that can prove a point. Then, edit for the best examples that prove your point. Remember what I said in class which is one point does not equal one paragraph.
Capital Letters for subpoints
Arabic Numbers for sub-subpoints
Small letters for sub-sub-subpoints
Small roman numbers for sub-sub-sub-subpoints (Most of you will not reach this level of specificity; thus, do not worry about this level of your outline.
Show logical relationships of ideas through proper indentation
Only one sentence per letter or number in an outline
Rule of Division: Never have an A without a B, 1 without 2, a without b. If your outline is divided into capital letters only(A,B,C), you have not fully explored the necessary proofs for a major point, or your point does not have enough evidence to support what you are trying to say.
Cite anything that is quoted word for word directly from the original source.
Cite anything that is paraphrased from the original source
Cite all tables figures, maps, and etc.
Cite anything from electronic sources from the internet.
Cite any interviews.
EXPLAIN your quotations-Tell your readers what the quotations/fact/data means with regard to your topic and how they relate to your thesis.
Key thought: Why is this important and what does it have to do with my main point?
In-text Citations-When citing prose plays like Death of a Salesman and A Doll’s House, use the page number first, followed by a semicolon and then other identifying information (e.g. Miller 9; Act 1). When citing verse plays with line numbers provided, use those instead of page numbers, separating division numbers with a period (see example above).
Students should be able to:
Demonstrate the critical thinking skills involved in arriving at an evaluative or interpretive thesis statement that can be supported with concrete evidence.
Organize essays, using both formal and informal outlining techniques, so that the plan indicates logic and coherence.
Compose relevant, concise, and complete introductions that clearly express the central intent of the paper and conclusions that reaffirm the thesis and attain closure.
**4. Exhibit refinement in developing an idea through several paragraphs, using sophisticated and appropriate transitions, topic sentences, and adequate supporting details. All essays must consist of more than five paragraphs! Essays of five paragraphs or less will not be accepted for grading.**
Use rhetorically appropriate tone, diction, and style.
Write standard written English free of major grammar, usage, and punctuation errors.
Write about literary works by looking beyond the surface of imaginative literature to interpret the authors’ themes and evaluate their techniques.
Research Skills to be Developed
Students should be able to:
Demonstrate a working knowledge of bibliographic resources and their use in locating book, periodical, and pamphlet materials. (Special emphasis should be placed on research techniques in relation to subject headings.)
Demonstrate a working knowledge of the organization of both print and electronic library holdings in order to use reference, periodical, book, and document holdings efficiently in research.
Use correct citation and note-taking methods.
