Life and Times of Sara Baartman Documentary

Life and Times of Sara Baartman is a film featuring a story of a KhoiKhoi young woman who leaves her home in Cape Town to London not knowing what she awaited her in the far place. At 20 years old, Sara Baartman travels to London where, unknown to her, she is displayed as a freak across Britain and the rest of Europe. Sarah Baartman became image of racial inferiority and black female sexuality.

In 1884, Sara was taken to France where she was subjected to further public ridicule and abuse of her black female sexuality. She became object of scientific and medical research especially on black female sexuality. These adversities led to her death a year after, but even in her death, scientific imperialists continued investigating her body. Her sexual organs and brains were displayed to the public in Musee de I’Homme in Paris until 1985. The level of racial inferiority and black feminine abuse orchestrated against Sara Baartman is so absurd. No one deserves what Sara went through as human being. It is so ironic that the same racial inferiority still exists to date. Public ridicule against Caster Semenya from the same country as Sara Baartman clearly indicates the persistent racial inferiority and black woman sexuality against African women.
