The first part of Howl is about a lost world, a nightmare vision.

The third part of the poem is an attempt to reclaim something spiritual, some unity among individuals. Ginsberg addresses Carl Solomon, his friend to whom the poem is dedicated who had been in a mental institution. The poem reaches an understanding through recreating the Solomon’s experiences.
