This is a writing exercise that students normally write on the first day of class. The purpose of this assignment is to get your thinking about a possible semester topic.
Think about problems that face your community/world that are controversial (conflicting perspectives about the issue). Choose one problem that is controversial and describe it so that the reader fully understands that
(1) there is a problem, and
(2) that this problem needs to be solved.
Then come up with at least one solution to the problem. Detail the process that you suggest members of the community might follow in order to resolve the problem at hand. Make sure you provide reasons, explanations, and examples that let the reader know (1) what steps you suggest will solve the problem (2) why the process you suggest is likely to succeed. You may want to consider arguments that could be made against your suggestions and then give reasons as to why your suggestions are more reasonable. Evaluate your solution and end your essay with a conclusion that convinces the reader that your suggestions have the possibility to resolve the issue.
