Question
ENG001 Advanced Composition and Critical Thinking
In-Text Citation #1
You will construct five separate sentences using in-text citations in MLA format in this activity. It is very simple.
Since incorporating quoted material into your papers requires you to follow a number of conventions, it is a good idea to get some isolated practice at this important writing element. In this assignment, you will read the article “Evolution’s Sweet Tooth” by Daniel E. Lieberman on page 522 from Current Issues and Enduring Questions. You will write five independent sentences that model each of the five different ways of using in-text citations shown below. Use the article to help you pull quotes to use in this exercise. Number each of your sentences.
*If you don’t refer to the author by name in the sentence with a quote, make sure you include the last name in the in-text citation at the end of the sentence.
The quotations will be set up in five different ways:
Introduce the author before providing a quote (add the page number of the quote at the end of the sentence)
Example:
Eric Pierceson states that “most bullies are children who were in a position where they were once victimized by another child or adult” (210).
Introduce the author and provide a little background information on him or her before you provide the quote:
Example:
Eric Pierceson, who has done extensive research on child psychology and the effects of bullying on young children, states that “all teenagers that come from single-parent families are more at risk of being bullied when they enter grade school” (211).
Provide a context before introducing the quote:
Example:
It can be easy to detect bullies on school campuses because “they tend to stand out in a crowd due to their loud and aggressive personalities” (Pierceson 212).
Add two quotes to the sentence and provide a context for the quote (this means that you make a connection between the source and your own words):
Example:
Childhood bullying is most harmful “when children do not get the counseling they need as the bullying takes place” and they develop deep-rooted psychological habits “as a result of protective defenses they create in their mind” to protect themselves from the trauma they have experienced as a result of the bullying (Pierceson 211-213).
Introduce the quote with a complete sentence and a colon:
Example:Pierceson remembers the time that he was bullied as a teenager on the basketball court: “I remember standing there hoping that a teacher would come by and see that I was in need of some help, but nobody came and I had to face them alone” (218).
