The unit will be delivered as follows:
9 x 1 hour facetoface lectures (weeks 1 to 10)
3 x 1 hour online prerecorded lectures (weeks 11 to 13)
11 x 1 hour facetoface tutorials (weeks 2 to 13)
The unit will also include a series of online activities. However these are not compulsory
and nonassessable items.

week by week breakdown of readings online activities and tutorial questions for this
unit.
Attendance
Students are expected to attend all facetoface lectures and tutorials and to participate
actively in all class activities including online activities. Failure to do so may seriously
undermine a students ability to complete the unit satisfactorily. Attendance records
may be consulted in the assessment of any requests for extensions or Special
Consideration. You should advise the Unit Coordinator or your tutor if you are unable to
attend a tutorial due to illness or misadventure.
This unit is worth 10 credit points indicating that success in the unit requires at least 10
hours work per week. Two hours will be lecture/tutorial time one hour will be online
activities and the remaining 7 hours should be devoted to reading and study
assessment preparation and revision. In this unit you will need to devote much of this
time to reading the set reading materials.

crime patterns of offending and the impacts of societal responses to
young people;
2. Assess social and political forces that have shaped governmental responses
to juvenile crime worldwide;
3. Analyse discourses and practices used to control and prevent juvenile crime
in Australia;
4. Evaluate criminal justice interventions for working with young people
committing crimes in Australia.
5. Write effectively using writing styles commonly used in criminal justice
settings.

Describe ONE incident of youth crime reported in the mass media over the last 10 years where the
offender(s) have been members of an ethnic minority group and discuss the effects of cultural
reductionism in the medias representation of your chosen incident.
Question 3:
Describe the current level of Indigenous youth contact with the juvenile justice system and discuss
this with reference to white Australias colonisation of Aboriginal Australia.
Two required readings for each of these essay topics can be located in the Assessments tab on the
units vUWS site. You are to use the two required readings plus three other scholarly sources of your
own choosing to inform your essay. In total you must use a minimum of five scholarly sources for this
assessment.
Your written response to the essay question will be submitted in essay format using the 1500 (+/
10% leniency) word limit. It would be appropriate to use headings to signal the way you will direct
your discussion however you must use a formal writing style with correct referencing using the
Harvard system. In the essay you should:
Use a minimum of five scholarly sources (e.g. Journal articles book chapters and respected
government websites).
You must acknowledge the ideas of others reference direct quotes properly using the Harvard
referencing system and include a reference list at the end (not included in the word count).
Viewpoints need to be substantiated using relevant literature empirical evidence and
convincing argumentation.
The task must be wordprocessed doubled spaced and use 12pt font.
You must also retain an electronic or hard copy of your submission as dictated by University

Introduction: Orients the reader to the topic previewing the stages of the essay and clarifying the
writers position.
Body paragraphs: The body consists of a logically sequenced series of paragraphs that develops the
essay topic. Each paragraph should express one key idea that relates to your analysis. Begin the
paragraph by introducing this key idea and then explain and elaborate on the idea using relevant
literature and research. Try to use sentences that connect each paragraph to one another by linking
ideas and lines of argument.
Conclusion: Restates the major argument developed in the essay. Briefly summarise major points and
implications.
