HOW WILL THIS BENEFIT THE INDUSTRY ESPECIALLY IN THE DESIGNING AND BUILDING STAGES OF A PROJECT?

HOW WILL THIS BENEFIT THE INDUSTRY ESPECIALLY IN THE DESIGNING AND BUILDING STAGES OF A PROJECT?

The Importance of Communication and Teamwork skills in Construction Management.

Topic Summary:

This research topic will cover and identify different areas in construction that require and are affected by these necessary skills. Moreover, cases where skills like these have been overlooked and therefore lead to a fault in the outcome due to miscommunication between the team members and workforce or misinterpretation of information, also cases where the team has failed to work with one another, which all lead to the same outcome where it could potentially affect three specific areas; which is time, cost and quality. On the other hand successful combination of the two skills results in outstanding performance benefitting everyone involved in the project, where everything would go according to schedule and there will be no lack in information.

Main Question:

Why should we implement communication and teamwork skills as a requirement in the construction industry?

Sub-questions:

If communication skill was a requirement how would this affect the performance of the individual? And the construction industry?

Why is working in a team more viable and more suited for this industry? How is it more efficient?

With communication and working in a team set as a requirement how will this reflect back on the industry?

How will this benefit the industry especially in the designing and building stages of a project?

Reasons:

This topic is worthwhile because throughout the construction industry history there have been a lot of examples of good and bad communication and team working skills that have been reflected in the scheduling and outcomes of the construction projects. It is because these two skills isn’t a requirement and is just assumed that everyone is capable of doing it therefore these two skill areas are vulnerable to error. So raising this topic would be good idea in order for the industry to implement the training necessary to develop the individual’s knowledge in these areas therefore increasing the individual’s performance, and the outcome would be optimal results.

Who would be interested in the answer to this question?

The people who would be most interested in the answer to this would be the managers and the clients. Firstly the managers, because they have the power to implement this system into work with the training course to teach their employees these two skills, and if effective this would benefit their corporation, this way no information would be misinterpreted and ensure that the workforce work together as a whole and ensure success and efficiency. It would also help the workforce work better with the other contractors and all other companies involved in the same project as they would be able to work as a team rather than individual companies doing their job. The clients would be interested in this too because as they hire a company to do a project and see that all employees are required to have these skills they are assured that the company would be organised therefore they can trust that the work would be done accordingly.

Relevance of this research:

The relevance of this research to the industry is highly prioritised because it is essential in this type of industry as well as any other, because it is used on a daily basis and it can affect the outcomes. So that is why this is very important to this industry because mistakes and faults in the outcome result in loss of time, money and resources to fix the problem, which wouldn’t have occurred in the first place with good communication and teamwork. In the end of the day it is a business and in the construction business time, money and resources are most important so mistake results in the company losing.
