The three CBMS123/234 Essays (E1 – E3) are intended to be more flexible, open-ended, and
creative than Workshops. A general topic is specified with suggested network/reading activities and with
several options to suit individual interests, guided by a set of generic topical questions. The format of
Essays is quite different from that of Workshops. The Macquarie Dictionary defines an essay as “a short
literary composition on a particular subject”; it should therefore be more than a fragmented collection of
answers to a set of questions. CBMS123/234 does not aim to deal with the technical details of chemistry
– some of you will know about these already, others simply don’t need to know. We want everybody to
be able to reach conclusions about how chemists think and work and what the outcomes
(industrial/commercial/domestic/medical/environmental) and relevance of such activities are. Each topic
is intended to be flexible and adaptable to include relevant subjects that may interest you.
All Essays must contain references to the source material. Try and use primary
sources as much as possible (books, journals). Web citations are fine but Encyclopaedias are not primary
sources.
Grading Rubric. Points to be considered in grading your essay are:
Is essay relevant to topic and is the topic covered in depth
Accurate presentation of facts
Rigorous critique of key concepts
Original and creative thought
Fluency of writing
Length criteria satisfied
Spelling and grammar
Effective use of tables, figures, data (if appropriate to the essay topic)
