Assessment 2
Assessment type: Syllabus design and presentation – individual assessment.
• Written Syllabus – Equivalent 2000-2500 words;
• Presentation – 15 minutes including question time.
Purpose: This assessment is designed to allow students to put into practice the
methodology that has been learnt throughout the course. It should also make
reference to Assessment 2 – The Literature Review. This assessment relates to
Learning Outcomes a, and b.

Topic: An ESP Syllabus.
Task Details: You are tasked with creating the first week of a ten-week ESP
syllabus. You can, and are recommended to, use a text book or
multiple text books as your guide but you must provide supplementary
activities (these do not have to be made but explained in the 1-2 page
syllabus notes). It is essential that you show that you have integrated
the ideology from assessment 2 and make reference to this as well as
the methodology we have learnt during the course.
The document should follow the following outline:
1. Table including syllabus outline for the first week. Include: learning
outcomes, activities (incl. page numbers of textbooks), supplementary tasks,
homework. This should be annotated to explain your reasoning for choosing
the activities and any references to literature that you have consulted.
2. Appendices: Photocopy of the textbook pages that have been used and any
other referenced resources (you do not need to make any yourself)
3. 1-2 page Syllabus Notes: In this you must provide the context and
justification for your syllabus. It is recommended that you cover the following
topics and make reference to specific elements of your syllabus in doing so.
• Participants: Who are the learners? What are their abilities and
how do you know? What level are they working at?
• Reason for learning: What different activities will the learner need
to do in the future? Attend lectures, seminars, give presentations
etc.
• Setting: What time and place does the learning take place in?
• Interaction: How will this take place between students or students

and teacher. Explain whether learning will be independent, paired,
grouped (what groupings and why?)
• Instrumentality: What methods of communication will you
incorporate? Spoken, Written and will this be Receptive, Productive
etc. What channels of communication? Face-to-face, Text, etc.
How balanced will these elements be? Why?
• How will you integrate the four skills? Or is it not important for your
context?
• Assessment: What assessments will there be?
• Feedback: How will opportunities for feedback be provided and
what types of feedback will be incorporated?
• Approach: What approach have you followed and why? ContentBased, Genre-Based, Task Approach, The Process Approach
• Problems: What anticipated problems can you foresee? How can
you combat them?
The assignment should be professionally presented using:
• appropriate headings and subheadings
• Arial 10 pt or Times New Roman 12 pt; single spaced; 2.5cm margins
• Harvard (Anglia) style referencing
Marking: The assessment will be marked as follows:

• Addresses each of the elements of the above outline;
• Provides evidence of knowledge and skills specific to the assignment;
• Discusses and justifies the decisions made with reference to the literature;

and appropriately;
• Uses appropriate theoretical support and applies critical judgement and
creativity in the application of theory to the assignment.
Presentation of Syllabus
Marks out of 20 will be awarded on how well the student:
• Structures and demonstrates organisation in the presentation of information;
• Communicates clearly and effectively;
• Demonstrates professional presentation skills;
• Uses appropriate visual aids to support the presentation;
• Gains audience involvement;
• Responds to questions.
