04 May HOW IS LATE 20TH CENTURY FEMINISM INDEBTED TO THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT AND WHAT NEW ALLIANCES MAKE SENSE?
Parameters of Assignment: ten pages based upon scholarly sources and documented with bibliography and footnotes. Select your option as soon as possible. Realize the limitations of time, length and source availability. Although this may seem obvious, make sure you find the subject compelling. It is your responsibility to define the area of inquiry, locate the sources, critically examine the material and supply a specific point of view, which serves as the theme of your paper. Interdisciplinary methods may be brought to bear but maintain a historical perspective and focus on the U.S. (unless you clear it with me). Approximately mid-semester, you will return a preliminary report on your progress; form circulated with syllabus.
Option 1: Select an area of interest to you. In particular, choose something, which reflects your strong beliefs. Place the topic in historical context and carefully support the position youve taken with evidence. Try to convince the “audience” that your issue belongs at the TOP of any U.S. feminist agenda. You may also campaign against an item but only after a conversation with me. One of the purposes of this exercise is to understand the complex process of formulating an agenda and bringing about change.
Option 2: Employ any of the following approaches: biographical, political, social, intellectual, among others. Formulate a question such as: How do contemporary feminists explain the conservatism of many white women suffragists? What is the history of comparable worth and what are its prospects for resolving the wage or unequal pay gap? Should the equal rights amendment (ERA) that once split the womens movement again command widespread interest? How is late 20th century feminism indebted to the civil rights movement and what new alliances make sense? How was Louisa May Alcott a feminist? How should womens history be a part of high school curriculum? Support your answers with evidence and a detailed argument.
