19 Jun WHAT IS THE MEAN EATING TIME FOR NORMAL WEIGHT INDIVIDUALS?
Part One:
Green & Salkind: Lesson 24, First Exercise
Open Lesson 24 Exercise File 1 found in Blackboard Course content (under Syllabus and Assignment Instructions—Assignment Instructions—SPSS Homework 2—SPSS Homework 2 Files—Mod2_Lesson 24 Exercise File 1).
This data set pertains to the eating speed of different people at a McDonald’s restaurant as described in the scenario for the first end-of-chapter exercise in Green and Salkind, Lesson 24. Read the research scenario in the text, then follow the directions below as some questions have been altered.
Paste SPSS output.
What are the values of t and p for “Equal Variances Assumed”?
Answer the following questions:
What is the mean eating time for normal weight individuals?
What is the standard deviation for overweight individuals?
What is the result of Levene’s test for homogeneity of variance (F and p values)?
Write an APA-style Results section based on your analyses. All homework “Results sections” should follow the example given in the SPSS tutorials and the Course Content document “Writing Results of Statistical Tests in APA Format.” Remember to include a decision about the null hypothesis.
Create a boxplot (not an error bar graph) to demonstrate the difference between the groups, using the following steps (covered also in Lesson 21)
Go to Graphs—Legacy Dialogs—Boxplot—Select “Simple”—Select “Summaries for Groups of Cases”
Click “Define”: Variable = “Time Spent” (this is your dependent variable) and Category Axis = “Weight” (this is your independent, or grouping, variable)
OK
Part Two:
Research Scenario: An industrial/organizational psychologist is interested in studying the effect of the type of bonus system on employee morale at a tech company. He divides employees into two groups. One group works within a standard bonus system, with larger one-time bonuses granted by upper management during each quarter. The other group works within a system where upper management award smaller bonuses to workers throughout the pay period. At the end of the pay period, the amount of bonuses in each group is the same, with the only difference being when they were awarded. The I/O psychologist then assesses employee morale using a 10-item scale with values ranging from 1 (very low morale) to 50 (very high morale). Using the table below, enter the data into a new SPSS data file and use an independent-samples t test to analyze the claim that the two bonus payment methods result in different levels of employee morale.
The steps of the test will be the same as the ones you have been practicing in Part One of the assignment— the only difference is that you are now responsible for creating the data file as well. Remember to name and define your variables under the “Variable View,” then return to the “Data View” to enter and analyze the data. The table is shown on the following page.
